Heterogeneity and Evolutionary Tunability of Escherichia coli Resistance against Extreme Acid Stress

Stefanie Van Riet et al.

Summary: "The study reveals that Escherichia coli can express acid resistance mechanisms heterogeneously even in the absence of acid stress, preemptively creating acid-resistant subpopulations within a clonal population. Furthermore, mutations in specific genes can result in constitutive upregulation of acid resistance, with potential cross-resistance to heat stress."

Phage gene expression and host responses lead to infection-dependent costs of CRISPR immunity

Sean Meaden et al.

Summary: Studies using the model of Pseudomonas aeruginosa PA14 and its phage DMS3vir have shown that although CRISPR is initially favored, bacteria with phage receptor mutations quickly dominate the population after subsequent reinfections. The expression of phage genes before cleavage by the CRISPR-Cas immune system is the most likely explanation for the observed fitness cost induced by phages.
