Sustainable films containing AIE-active berberine-based nanoparticles: A promising antibacterial food packaging

Kaixuan Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, biodegradable and antibacterial packaging films were successfully prepared by incorporating self-assembled berberine-cinnamic acid nanoparticles (BC NPs) into the film matrixes. The films showed improved UV-shielding property, hydrophobicity, thermal stability, mechanical property, and antibacterial ability. The antimicrobial activity of the nano composite films (NFs) was significantly enhanced under white light, making them ideal candidate materials to replace plastics and extend the shelf life of food products.

Robust and highly adaptable high internal phase gel emulsions stabilized solely by a natural saponin hydrogelator glycyrrhizic acid

Mengyue Xu et al.

Summary: A new class of high internal phase gel emulsions (gel-HIPEs) with high mechanical strength can be synthesized easily using natural food-grade saponin glycyrrhizic acid (GA) as the sole stabilizer. The formation of fibrillar hydrogel networks in the continuous phase gives rise to unique gel-HIPEs, which exhibit remarkable mechanical performance due to the highly viscoelastic GA nanofibrillar networks actively trapping the emulsion droplets. These robust gel-HIPEs can serve as solid templates for fabricating stable porous materials and are promising long-term delivery vehicles for lipophilic active cargoes.

Targeted delivery of Chinese herb pair-based berberine/tannin acid self-assemblies for the treatment of ulcerative colitis

Shiyun Chen et al.

Summary: This study developed a targeted delivery system based on self-assemblies of berberine (BBR) and tannic acid (TA) for the treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC). The self-assemblies were optimized and coated with hyaluronic acid (HA) for targeted colon delivery. The results showed that the modified self-assemblies could increase cellular uptake and accumulation in inflamed colon lesions, inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokine levels, restore expression of tight junction-associated proteins, and recover gut microbiome alteration, thereby exerting anti-inflammatory effects against DSS-induced acute colitis.

Large amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) for nonlinear rheological behavior of heterogeneous emulsion gels made from natural supramolecular gelators

Qing Li et al.

Summary: The rheological behaviors of emulsion gels made from natural glycyrrhizic acid nanofibrils and sitosterol-oryzanol mixtures were studied, showing different microstructures and linear/nonlinear viscoelastic behaviors depending on the concentration of sterols in the oil phase. The oil phase structuring by the sterols significantly enhanced the viscoelasticity of the emulsion gels, with percolating emulsion gels exhibiting higher elasticity than jammed emulsion gels. These findings could aid in designing novel emulsion gels with specific textural and functional properties for various applications.
