Test anxiety in primary school children: A 20-year systematic review and meta-analysis

Davina A. Robson et al.

Summary: This study reviewed research on test anxiety in primary school children aged 5-12 years. The findings showed that test anxiety negatively affected academic achievement, academic self-concept, and self-efficacy, and positively related to general anxiety, social anxiety, and depression. Girls had higher levels of test anxiety than boys, and Asian samples had higher levels compared to European and North American samples. Intervention studies have been successful in reducing test anxiety and improving outcomes. Further experimental studies targeting test anxiety reduction among primary school children are recommended.

The psychological imprint of inequality: Economic inequality shapes achievement and power values in human life

Hongfei Du et al.

Summary: This research investigates how economic inequality shapes basic human values. The findings suggest that people who live in areas with higher economic inequality or perceive higher economic inequality are more likely to endorse achievement and power values, while being less likely to endorse benevolence values. Particularly within countries, economic inequality may lead to an overemphasis on achievement and power, which in turn erodes social cohesion.

The mediating role of test anxiety in the evolution of motivation and achievement of students transitioning from elementary to high school

Catherine Frechette-Simard et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of test anxiety on changes in academic self-concept, expectations of success, task values, and achievement during the transition to secondary school. The results show that test anxiety mediates the changes in academic self-concept and partially mediates the changes in expectations of success and achievement, specifically in mathematics for girls. The findings suggest that students with lower levels of motivation and achievement, particularly in mathematics, are more vulnerable to difficulties during the transition to secondary school.

Test anxiety, anxiety disorders, and school-related wellbeing: Manifestations of the same or different constructs?

David W. Putwain et al.

Summary: Previous studies have shown that high test anxiety is associated with higher likelihood of meeting criteria for an anxiety disorder and reporting more symptoms of anxiety disorders. This study found through network analysis and latent profile analysis that test anxiety, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and school-related wellbeing are distinct constructs, with support for the idea that test anxiety is separate from generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder. The results also provided some support for the Dual Factor Model of Mental Health.

Revisiting the Role of Worries in Explaining the Link Between Test Anxiety and Test Performance

Frieder L. Schillinger et al.

Summary: The study found that interference and lack of confidence in test anxiety independently predicted test performance, while worry and arousal were not independent factors explaining test performance. These results suggest educators to reconsider the role of worries in explaining the test anxiety-performance link and to help identify students who may underperform on tests.

Activity Achievement Emotions and Academic Performance: A Meta-analysis

Jesus Camacho-Morles et al.

Summary: Achievement emotions, including enjoyment, anger, frustration, and boredom, are closely linked to academic performance, with enjoyment positively correlated and anger and boredom negatively correlated. The relationship with frustration is weak, and the impact of activity emotions on academic performance is stronger for secondary school students compared to primary school and college students.
