Novel lightweight and efficient electromagnetic waves absorbing performance of biomass porous carbon/polymer-derived composite ceramics

Jie Liu et al.

Summary: A lightweight and efficient electromagnetic waves absorbing material, the biomass porous carbon/polymer-derived composite ceramics, was prepared using sorghum straw as the matrix and combining acetylacetone nickel and polysilazane. The addition of 2% acetylacetone nickel and 30% filler content resulted in strong response to electromagnetic waves. The material exhibited a minimum reflection loss of -69.44 dB at a thickness of 1.33 mm and an effective absorption bandwidth of 4.27 GHz (13.73-18 GHz) at 1.49 mm. The introduction of Ni2Si effectively adjusted impedance matching and enhanced the electromagnetic wave absorbing properties.

Lightweight and geometrically complex ceramics derived from 4D printed shape memory precursor with reconfigurability and programmability for sensing and actuation applications

Siyao Chen et al.

Summary: There is growing interest in additive manufacturing (AM) of ceramics due to the feasibility of achieving complex shapes. Polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) offer advantages for ceramic AM, but the potential of preceramic polymers is not fully utilized. This study synthesized a multifunctional preceramic polymer composite with reconfigurability and shape memory effect, allowing 4D printing of lightweight self-shaping ceramics with complex geometries. The resulting ceramics showed semiconducting behavior and were used to design temperature sensors with reshaping capabilities.

High performance X-band electromagnetic wave absorption of SiBCN metamaterials fabricated by direct pyrolysis

Li Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, electromagnetic wave (EMW)-absorbing ceramic metamaterials without doping absorbers were prepared by direct pyrolysis of polymer-derived SiBCN ceramics (PDC-SiBCN). The pyrolytic behavior of the ceramics, the effect of the pyrolysis temperature on the mechanical strength, and the EMW absorption properties of the metamaterials were investigated. The results demonstrated the optimal impedance matching and absorption performance of PDC-SiBCN at a pyrolysis temperature of 1500 degrees C, and the metamaterial showed efficient absorption of the full X-band when its thickness was within a certain range.
