Self-motivated and directed learning across the lifespan

Lucy M. Cronin-Golomb et al.

Summary: Self-motivated and directed learning plays a crucial role in expanding knowledge for learners of all ages. This review focuses on the role of personal motivators and cognitive processes, such as executive functions, in self-motivated and directed lifelong learning. The integration of personal motivators and cognitive processes can provide a better understanding of the mechanisms and processes involved in self-motivated and directed learning across the lifespan.

Applying Self-Determination Theory to Education: Regulations Types, Psychological Needs, and Autonomy Supporting Behaviors

Frederic Guay

Summary: The self-determination theory highlights the importance of satisfying students' psychological needs in influencing their motivation and school outcomes. Autonomy supportive practices by parents and teachers can facilitate the fulfillment of these needs, while intervention programs aimed at these psychological needs can lead to improved motivation and adjustment outcomes for students.

Lord's paradox in latent change score modeling: An example involving facilitating longitudinal effects between intelligence and academic achievement

Kimmo Sorjonen et al.

Summary: It has been claimed that intelligence and academic achievement have a bidirectional facilitating effect on each other over time. However, our findings suggest that this longitudinal association may be due to regression toward the mean instead of a true facilitating effect. Therefore, researchers should be cautious of this fallacy and verify their findings without adjusting for the initial value on the outcome.

Students' interest and self-efficacy and the impact of changing learning environments

Sabine Schweder et al.

Summary: Through a four-wave study, it was found that students' interest and self-efficacy increased during self-directed learning and the entire school year. This suggests that self-directed learning intervals benefit the interplay between interest and self-efficacy.

Adolescents' enjoyment and effort in class: Influenced by self-directed learning intervals

Sabine Schweder et al.

Summary: Based on the control-value theory, this study examined the development and change of enjoyment and effort among adolescents during a school year. The results showed a generally positive development, especially with the two 1-week self-directed learning interventions. Furthermore, enjoyment and effort were reciprocally linked over time, but only when experienced after self-directed learning.

Digital support for student engagement in blended learning based on self-determination theoryk

Thomas K. F. Chiu

Summary: In a blended learning environment, digital support is more effective than teacher support in engaging students by fulfilling their needs. Teacher support is closely related to student engagement, while the relationship between digital support and student engagement varies depending on factors such as offering multiple modalities and emotional designs.

Interest, flow and learning strategies how the learning context affects the moderating function of flow

Sabine Schweder et al.

Summary: Comparing two contrasting learning contexts, the study found that students in self-directed learning environment tend to have more interest, experience greater flow, and use elaboration and persistence learning strategies. Flow experience positively moderates the relationship between interest and learning strategies in self-directed learning.

Needs satisfaction and motivation among adolescent boys and girls during self-directed learning intervention

Sabine Schweder et al.

Summary: This study found that boys reported higher values in introjected and extrinsic regulation, and detected gender-based differences in paths between autonomy and intrinsic and identified motivation. Additionally, competence was only associated with intrinsic motivation among girls. Overall, these findings suggest fewer gender-based differences in needs satisfaction and academic self-regulation in an SDL intervention than in previous research on TDL contexts.
