Performance of a trial sea ranch for the commercial sea cucumber, Holothuria scabra, in Papua New Guinea

Cathy Hair et al.

Summary: The study in the Tigak Islands of Papua New Guinea found that the recovery rate of cultured juvenile sea cucumbers was low, mainly due to factors such as mortality, migration, and the misidentification of cultured and wild individuals. The species richness and density of the wild sea cucumber community increased in response to stocking and protecting the sea ranch.

Hatchery-produced sandfish (Holothuria scabra) show altered genetic diversity in New Caledonia

Summary: In order to sustainably promote the development of wild sea cucumber fisheries, management strategies including restocking and sea ranching programs have been implemented. Genetic analysis reveals that wild populations have high genetic diversity and gene flow, while hatchery-produced individuals suffer from genetic drift and small effective population size.

Saving the sea cucumbers: Using population genomic tools to inform fishery and conservation management of the Fijian sandfish Holothuria (Metriatyla) scabra

Kelly T. Brown et al.

Summary: The sea cucumber Holothuria (Metriatyla) scabra, also known as sandfish, is a valuable species in the global beche-de-mer trade. Overharvesting and ineffective fishery management have significantly depleted sandfish stocks in the Pacific region. In Fiji, sandfish populations have not recovered since a 1988 harvest ban, and genetic studies were conducted to inform fishery management and restocking efforts. Three genetically distinct populations were identified, with individuals from Lakeba island showing signs of local adaptation. There is a pattern of genetic isolation by distance in Fijian sandfish, and hatchery-based production of juveniles shows promise for stock replenishment.

Factors affecting the spatio-temporal variability in the production of sandfish Holothuria scabra juveniles in floating hapa ocean nursery systems

Jon P. Altamirano et al.

Summary: The hatchery production of tropical sea cucumber Holothuria scabra has faced challenges in up-scaling production in the Philippines due to limited land-based facilities, leading to research on ocean-based sandfish nurseries. Wind stress was found to be the most significant driver of variability in sandfish culture performances, impacting growth and survival of juveniles. The study provides valuable information on suitable ocean nursery conditions and spatial-temporal considerations for optimizing production of H. scabra juveniles.
