High-performance all-solid-state Li2S batteries using an interfacial redox mediator

Chun Yuen Kwok et al.

Summary: A Li2S/LiVS2 core-shell cathode architecture design is reported for all-solid-state Li-S batteries, which improves the kinetics of Li2S cathode by using the shell as a charge-carrier transport vehicle and electron transfer mediator. The solid-state Li2S cell exhibits good rate capability and capacity retention at room temperature, and high active material loading is demonstrated with stable capacity retention. However, the cycle life is limited under high active material loading.

Regulating uniform nucleation of ZnS enables low-polarized and high stable aqueous Zn-S batteries

Tiansheng Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, a regulation strategy for uniform ZnS nucleation was proposed by introducing PEG-400 additive into the zinc ion battery, which improved the uneven conversion of sulfur-based cathode materials to S during the charge process. The modified solvation structure formed by this electrolyte allowed the formation of uniform and small ZnS particles, leading to enhanced battery performance.

Boosting Cathode Activity and Anode Stability of Zn-S Batteries in Aqueous Media Through Cosolvent-Catalyst Synergy

Min Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, we developed an optimized electrolyte for aqueous Zn-S battery using a mixture of tetraglyme (G4), water, and I2. The synergistic effect of G4-I2 improved the conversion kinetics of S and stabilized the Zn anode, leading to enhanced reversibility and cycling stability of the battery. The improved Zn-S cell delivered a high capacity at high current density and retained over 70% capacity after 600 cycles at 4A g(-1). The findings of this study can be applied to other ethers/water hybrid electrolytes, demonstrating the universality of the optimized electrolyte design strategy.

The key role of concentrated Zn(OTF)2 electrolyte in the performance of aqueous Zn-S batteries

Zhao Xu et al.

Summary: This communication systematically illustrates the electrolyte chemistry in aqueous Zn-S batteries. Compared to Zn(AC)(2) and ZnSO4, Zn(OTF)(2) electrolyte shows better electrochemical performance due to the impact of larger CF3SO3- anions on the solvation shell structure of Zn2+. Moreover, a reversible capacity of 788 mA h g(-1) is obtained in concentrated Zn(OTF)(2) electrolyte (3 M) with higher retention due to higher Zn-nucleation overpotential and slower corrosion reactions.

Summary: A modified diluted high concentration electrolyte (MDHCE) was designed for practical Li-S batteries to achieve high energy density and stable cycling. The MDHCE enables high stability and fast Li-ion transport at the hybrid interface, improving the reversibility of Li anode and kinetics of S cathode. The practicality of MDHCE was further demonstrated in a 0.4 Ah Li-S pouch cell with no obvious capacity fading and steady Coulombic efficiency of 99.6%.
