Legacy and Emerging Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances Behave Distinctly in Spatial Distribution and Multimedia Partitioning: A Case Study in the Pearl River, China

Weizong Li et al.

Summary: PFASs have gained worldwide attention due to their widespread occurrence, bioaccumulation, and toxicological effects. However, their fate in a lotic ecosystem is still largely unknown. In this study, the spatial distribution and multimedia partitioning of legacy and emerging PFASs were investigated in the Pearl River in South China. The results showed that the concentrations of PFASs decreased from the upper and middle sections to the downstream section of the river.

Legacy and alternative per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in a subtropical marine food web from the Beibu Gulf, South China: Fate, trophic transfer and health risk assessment

Chang-Gui Pan et al.

Summary: The study investigated the occurrence, bioaccumulation, and trophic magnification of legacy and alternative PFAS in subtropical marine food webs in the Beibu Gulf, South China. The results showed that most PFAS exhibited low bioaccumulation levels, with only a few substances showing trophic magnification. Overall, the risk of PFAS exposure through consumption of marine organisms was found to be relatively low.

Legacy and alternative per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in the West River and North River, south China: Occurrence, fate, spatio-temporal variations and potential sources

Chang-Er Chen et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the fate, trends, and potential sources of 57 PFASs in the North and West Rivers of the Pearl River system. It found that PFOA, PFOS, and 6:2Cl-PFESA were frequently present in waters, sediments, and fish, with higher PFAS loads contributed by the North River to the Pearl River Delta. Additionally, there is a shift in PFAS usage from legacy substances to alternatives in this area.

Spatial and Temporal Trends of Perfluoroalkyl Substances in Global Ocean and Coastal Waters

Derek Muir et al.

Summary: PFAS, specifically PFCAs and PFSAs, have been widely detected in global surface waters since the early 2000s. The majority of measurements come from coastal seas in Western Europe, China, Korea, and Japan, with highest median concentrations reported in China's Bohai and Yellow Seas region as well as Europe's North and Baltic seas. Significant declines in median PFSAs and C7-C12 PFCAs were observed in the period 2012-2018 in these regions, and for 2004-2017 in the Great Lakes. Mass discharge estimates indicate continued substantial riverine emissions of long chain PFCAs in the coastal seas of China and reductions in emissions for Western European rivers compared to earlier time periods.
