Stimuli-Responsive Molecular Switches and Logic Devices Based on Ru(II)-Terpyridyl-Imidazole Coordination Motif

Sourav Deb et al.

Summary: In this study, the synthesis, photophysics, and electrochemistry of three Ru(II)-terpyridine complexes derived from a new terpyridyl-imidazole ligand were reported. These complexes exhibited pH- and temperature-responsive behaviors, acting as molecular switches with reversible on/off states. The complexes showed significant changes in their absorption, emission, and redox behaviors as a function of pH and temperature, which were utilized for the fabrication of two-input binary logic gates. Density-functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density-functional theory (TD-DFT) computations were performed for appropriate interpretation of the spectral bands.

Summary: By designing two ancillary ligands, complete energy transfer to the Eu(III) ion was achieved in a europium complex, resulting in pure red emission. The europium complexes were used to fabricate LEDs emitting warm white and deep red light, suitable for plant cultivation applications.

Striking solvent dependence of total emission and circularly polarised luminescence in coordinatively saturated chiral europium complexes: solvation significantly perturbs the ligand field

Jack D. Fradgley et al.

Summary: The examination of total emission and circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) spectra of three 9-coordinate Eu(iii) complexes with well-defined speciation demonstrates that the ligand fields of these C-3 symmetric complexes are highly sensitive to solvent polarity, even if the solvent is not present in the first coordination sphere. The variations in energies, intensities, and sign of transitions with solvent polarity are rationalized through analysis of the factors influencing total and circularly polarised emission, with important implications for the design of responsive luminescent Ln(iii) probes.
