Teachers' competence promote close relationships to children with externalising problems and conflictual relationships

T. Wilhelmsen et al.

Summary: This study found that student-teacher closeness in Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) has a positive effect on reducing children's externalising problems at 8 years, especially from the perspective of mothers. However, early externalising problems at 3 years increase the risk of low closeness in ECEC. Insufficient competence among teachers regarding children's behavioural and social problems increases this risk, especially in the presence of student-teacher conflict. When teachers perceive their competence as sufficient, the risk of low closeness is reduced for these children.

Exploring the Role of Teacher-Child Relationships in the Longitudinal Associations Between Childhood Shyness and Social Functioning at School: A Prospective Cohort Study

S. Baardstu et al.

Summary: This study examined the protective role of relationships with early childhood and education care (ECEC) teachers for shy children's social functioning. The results suggest that early positive teacher-child relationships have a buffering influence on shy children's risk for social difficulties.

Predicting selection into ECEC of higher quality in a universal context: The role of parental education and income

Nina Alexandersen et al.

Summary: There is consensus on the positive effects of high quality Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) on children's development, but limited knowledge exists on the access to quality in ECEC in a universal context. This study in Norway investigates potential socioeconomic selection into higher quality ECEC and explores the impact of SES and structural quality in ECEC on student-teacher relationship quality. The findings suggest that efforts are needed to ensure higher structural quality in ECEC and enhance relationship quality for children from less advantageous socioeconomic backgrounds.
