Theoretical investigation of the structural, electronic, elastic and optical properties of the new layered ternary chalcogenide tetragonal compounds Cu2MX4 (M = W and Mo; X=S and Se)

O. Nbeg et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the structural, electronic, elastic, and optical properties of I-Cu2MX4(M = W, Mo; X = S, Se) using ab initio computation. The results are in agreement with experimental data and show that the compounds are semiconductors with indirect band gap nature. Population analysis is used to assess the nature of the chemical bonds, and the calculated elastic constants indicate that the materials are brittle and mechanically stable. The study also explores the frequency-dependent linear optical properties, such as refractive index and absorption coefficient, and shows good absorption coefficients in the ultraviolet region.

Topology Hierarchy of Transition Metal Dichalcogenides Built from Quantum Spin Hall Layers

Lixuan Xu et al.

Summary: The evolution of physical properties in 2D materials from monolayer to bulk introduces unique effects due to dimension confinement and provides a tuning knob for applications. The novel 2M-TMDs, consisting of translationally stacked 1T'-monolayers, exhibit tunable inverted bandgaps and interlayer coupling, making them promising as building blocks for various topological phases. By using advanced spectroscopy and calculations, a topology hierarchy is revealed, showing different topological insulator states in 2M-WSe2, MoS2, MoSe2, and 2M-WS2 due to band inversion amplitude and interlayer coupling. These 2M-TMDs are proposed as parent compounds for exotic phases and have great potential in quantum electronics due to their flexibility in patterning with 2D materials.

Synthesis, structural and physical properties of new ternary metal-rich phosphides M3Ge2P (M = Mo and W)

Menghu Zhou et al.

Summary: We report the successful synthesis of two new ternary metal-rich phosphides Mo3Ge2P and W3Ge2P, and their structural, electrical, magnetic, thermal, and electronic properties. These compounds exhibit weak magnetism and metallic conduction with electron-dominant charge carriers at high temperatures. Theoretical calculations demonstrate the dominance of Mo-4d (W-5d) orbital electrons in the band structures and density of states. Thermal conductivity analyses suggest a significant contribution of phonons to the total thermal conductivity in these metallic materials.

The charge localization deteriorating the thermoelectric properties: The case of kiddcreekite-type Cu6WSnSe8

Yumei Jiang et al.

Summary: Cu6WSnSe8 possesses characteristics of being a promising thermoelectric material but is limited as an excellent thermoelectric parent due to extremely low hole mobility. Although copper deficiency can increase electrical conductivity and power factor, the charge localization around W cations restricts the hole mobility, affecting the thermoelectric properties.

Enhanced thermoelectric performance of band structure engineered GeSe1-xTex alloys

D. Sidharth et al.

Summary: Nanostructured thermoelectric materials of GeSe1-xTex alloys were prepared and their structural, morphological, and thermoelectric properties were studied. With increasing Te content, the electrical resistivity, Seebeck coefficient, and carrier concentration of the alloys decreased, leading to higher power factor and improved ZT values at 708K. The decrease in band gap with Te content resulted in high carrier concentration and improved ZT, as confirmed by computational studies.
