Comparative Evaluation of Polyphenol Contents and Biological Activities of Five Cistus L. Species Native to Turkey

Fatma Nur Onal et al.

Summary: This study investigated the phytochemical compounds, antioxidant capacity, cytotoxic, antimicrobial, and anti-biofilm activities of hydroethanolic extracts from five Cistus species in Turkey. Various compounds, including (+)-catechin, epigallocatechin gallate, quercetin-3-O-rutinoside, quercetin-3-O-glucoside, kaempferol-3-O-glucoside, and luteolin, were detected in different amounts. C. creticus and C. parvifolius exhibited the strongest antioxidant capacities. The extracts showed inhibitory effects on the growth and biofilm formation of bacteria and Candida strains, with C. creticus extract displaying the strongest cytotoxic activity against human breast adenocarcinoma and prostate cell lines.

Flavonoids as Potential Anti-Inflammatory Molecules: A Review

Jameel M. Al-Khayri et al.

Summary: Hydroxylated polyphenols, or flavonoids, are plant-based compounds with various medicinal properties, including anti-inflammatory effects. They activate antioxidant pathways, regulate cytokine expression, and inhibit pro-inflammatory enzyme activity, providing potential treatment options for inflammatory diseases. Understanding the anti-inflammatory action of flavonoids is important for improving human health.
