Efficient catalytic system for converting N-acetyl-D-glucosamine into valuable chemical 3-acetylamino-5-acetylfuran

Yannan Du et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the designing of catalytic systems for the conversion of chitin biomass monomer N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (NAG) to 3-acetylamino-5-acetylfuran. Among the twelve catalysts studied, pyrazine hydrochloride ([Pyz]Cl) ionic liquid exhibited the best performance with a yield of 36.94% for 3A5AF from NAG. By further optimizing the reaction conditions and adding boric acid and CaCl2, the conversion rate of NAG reached 100% and the yield of 3A5AF in DMA increased to 69.54%. The reaction process was characterized using FTIR, HPLC-MS, and C-13 NMR, and the reactive intermediate was clearly detected. The results provide a mild and efficient reaction route for the degradation of biomass, and contribute to the theoretical research on quaternary amine catalysts in the conversion of biomass waste into high value-added chemicals.
