Detrital zircon U-Pb ages and geochemistry of Devonian-Carboniferous sandstones and volcanic rocks of the Hida Gaien belt, Southwest Japan: Provenance reveals a Gondwanan lineage for the early Paleozoic tectonic evolution of proto-Japan

Keisuke Suzuki et al.

Summary: Devonian-Carboniferous strata in the Hida Gaien belt, Southwest Japan, undergo lithological changes from clastic rocks and limestones to volcanic rocks. The sedimentary rocks during the Devonian period were derived from various basement rocks and the source shifted to basalts and rhyolites in the early Carboniferous period. Zircon grains indicate sediment supply from different areas in Eastern Asia and NE Gondwana. The Hida Gaien belt and other regions were geographically close to NE Gondwana during the Paleozoic era.

Deposition of sandstone (early Cambrian) above the Great Unconformity in the Sino-Korean Block, Gondwana: Control of antecedent topography

J. Woo et al.

Summary: The global transition between the Precambrian and Phanerozoic eons led to significant changes in paleoenvironments, as evidenced by sedimentary records above the Great Unconformity. In the Sino-Korean Block, the unconformity represents a boundary between different basement rocks and a distinctive suite of sandstones of early Cambrian age. Plate tectonic reconstruction shows that the sandstone was mainly deposited in the eastern part of the North China Platform, while the western part exhibited a time-transgressive unconformity with basal carbonate rocks of middle Cambrian age. The variation in sedimentary facies can be attributed to the antecedent topography of the surrounding continent.

The tectonic context of hafnium isotopes in zircon

K. E. Sundell et al.

Summary: The assembly and dispersion of continental crust play a crucial role in paleogeography and geochemical cycles. Zircon initial hafnium (epsilon Hf-T) can be used to track the reworking of Earth's crust. The study reveals significant geographic and temporal bias in the global epsilon Hf-T record, which is associated with sampling and regional tectonic events.

Detrital zircon in an active sedimentary recycling system: Challenging the 'source-to-sink' approach to zircon-based provenance analysis

Tom Andersen et al.

Summary: The age and properties of detrital zircon in a sediment reflect properties of the rocks in which the zircon crystallized. Holocene sediments in Southern Africa provide a good example for detrital zircon geochronology applied to sands or sandstones with a complex recycling history. The distribution of detrital zircon can be interpreted from prior knowledge of basin filling history, regional geology, geomorphology, drainage evolution, and wind patterns.

The Jangsan Formation refined

Sung Kwun Chough et al.

Summary: This paper reviews and refines the geological characteristics and stratigraphic position of the Jangsan Formation in the Taebaeksan Basin. The refined Jangsan Formation can be reliably correlated with an equivalent early Cambrian sandstone unit in Shandong Province, China and elsewhere in the northeast Asian continent.

U-Pb detrital zircon ages of Cambrian-Ordovician sandstones from the Taebaeksan Basin, Korea: Provenance variability in platform shelf sequences and paleogeographic implications

Moonsup Cho et al.

Summary: The study sheds light on the Paleozoic paleogeography of East Gondwanan terranes, particularly the North China Craton, using new data from sandstones in the Taebaeksan Basin, Korea. It reveals the vestige of coeval arc magmatism and significant changes in provenance, possibly linked to variations in paleowater depths. Detrital zircons with distinct distribution patterns suggest a connection to the proto-Japan arc and indicate a sedimentary influx from contemporaneous volcanic activity.

The Middle Permian to Triassic tectono-magmatic system in the southern Korean Peninsula

Sung Won Kim et al.

Summary: The Permo-Triassic adakitic magmatism in the southern Korean Peninsula is related to tectonomagmatic processes along the East Asian continental margin. The study provides evidence for a common subduction-accretion system between the North and South China Cratons with different magmatic suites generated by plate interactions. The adakitic magmatism reflects the interaction of slab-derived adakite melts with metasomatized mantle and lower crustal basement.

U-Pb ages of detrital zircons in lower Palaeozoic quartzites of the Taebaeksan Basin, eastern Sino-Korean Block: sediment provenance response to relative sea-level changes

Changyoon Lee et al.

Summary: This study investigated the provenances and reconstructed the paleogeography of the eastern Sino-Korean Block by examining U-Pb ages of detrital zircons in lower Cambrian-Ordovician successions. The presence of predominant Paleoproterozoic ages and minor Neoarchean ages indicated the preferred drainage system within the Sino-Korean Block. The different age spectra between the lower quartzites and conformably overlying shale suggests little igneous activity and the influence of external detritus on the region.
