From old to new inorganic materials for advanced applications: The paradigmatic example of the sepiolite clay mineral

Ana I. Ruiz et al.

Summary: This review article focuses on the sepiolite fibrous clay mineral, which is currently receiving much attention as an excellent candidate for advanced materials and applications. It discusses the relationship between the structural and morphological organization of sepiolite and its physicochemical characteristics, and explores the emerging applications of this clay. The article also introduces the current industrial applications of commercially available sepiolite-based materials, as well as the development of advanced inorganic and hybrid nanostructured materials through controlled chemical and physical modifications of sepiolite.

Mutual activation between ferrate and calcium sulfite for surface water pre-treatment and ultrafiltration membrane fouling control

Jinchuan Lian et al.

Summary: In this study, ferrate (Fe(VI)) and calcium sulfite (CaSO3) were combined to improve ultrafiltration (UF) performance in surface water treatment. The combination of Fe(VI) and CaSO3 generated various active species, effectively eliminating fluorescent components. Dissolved organic carbon and UV254 were significantly reduced with Fe(VI)/CaSO3 = 0.05/0.15 mM. After UF, the removal rate for these parameters were further improved. The UF stage also resulted in reduced fouling and improved membrane performance.

Fouling by inorganic-particle-containing cake layers can be reduced by microorganisms at low fluxes

Jiangshuai Hu et al.

Summary: A microbe-rich cake layer can reduce hydraulic resistance at low fluxes by decomposing organic foulants and creating cavities. However, the layer cannot decompose inorganic particles, which can increase cake resistance due to the synergistic fouling effect with organic foulants. The study investigated the change in hydraulic resistance, structure, and composition during the transition from a microbe-poor state to a microbe-rich state in the cake layer. Results showed reduced resistance and detachment of inorganic particles in the microbe-rich state, especially at ultra-low fluxes. The reduced fouling was attributed to the biodegradation of organic foulants promoting particle detachment and the microbial-induced cavities reducing the synergistic fouling effect.

Preparation of Co3O4@carbon nanotubes modified ceramic membrane for simultaneous catalytic oxidation and filtration of secondary effluent

Xiaoxiang Cheng et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel Co3O4@carbon nanotubes modified ceramic membrane (Co3O4@CNT-CM) was prepared for simultaneous catalytic peroxymonosulfate (PMS) oxidation and filtration of secondary effluent. The Co3O4@CNT catalyst showed good dispersibility and a large number of active sites, and the Co3O4@CNT-CM had a smooth surface, high permeate flux, and excellent catalytic PMS ability. The Co3O4@CNT-CM demonstrated enhanced antifouling and water purification performance in the treatment of secondary effluent.

Simultaneous ammonium and water recovery from landfill leachate using an integrated two-stage membrane distillation

Haiyang Yang et al.

Summary: An integrated two-stage membrane distillation (ITMD) system was proposed for the purification and ammonia recovery from landfill leachate (LFL). The ITMD effectively rejected organics and achieved high COD removal regardless of varying feed pH. The study demonstrated that ITMD can be a valuable strategy for simultaneous water purification and nutrient recovery from LFL, with competitive cost.

Cake layer reformation rates on self forming dynamic membranes and performance comparison with microfiltration membranes

Abdullah Kizilet et al.

Summary: Dynamic membranes are gaining attention as an alternative to conventional membranes due to their higher fluxes and lower fouling rates. Factors such as pore size, structure, and operating conditions affect the performance of dynamic membranes. This study focused on cake formation rates under different conditions and found that increasing fouling rates were related to decreased air sparging rates and higher food to microorganism ratios. The study also showed that the most stable operation was achieved with the 30 μm dynamic membrane, demonstrating its potential as an alternative to membrane bioreactors.

Synergistic process using calcium peroxide and ferrous iron for enhanced ultrafiltration of Microcystis aeruginosa-laden water

Xiaoxiang Cheng et al.

Summary: The synergistic process using CaO2 and FeSO4 effectively enhances the UF performance for the treatment of Microcystis aeruginosa-laden water by increasing the removal of algal cells and organics. The formation of algal flocs through the synergism of CaO2 and FeSO4 increases the size of algal pollutants. The pretreatment with CaO2/FeSO4 also improves the flux of membranes and reduces fouling.
