In Vitro and In Vivo Antibiofilm Activity of Red Onion Scales: An Agro-Food Waste

Nermeen B. B. Ali et al.

Summary: Red onion wastes (ROW) contain bioactive metabolites with potent antimicrobial effects, which were tested against MRSA bacteria in this study. The acidified ethanolic extract of red onion scales (RO-T), as well as its anthocyanin-rich fraction (RO-P) and flavonoid-rich fraction (RO-S), showed promising antibacterial activity. RO-S had the highest activity against MRSA and could eradicate biofilm formation. In vivo assessment using a rat model confirmed the significant reduction of MRSA bacterial load by the RO-T extract and vancomycin.

Comparative Metabolite Fingerprinting of Four Different Cinnamon Species Analyzed via UPLC-MS and GC-MS and Chemometric Tools

Mohamed A. Farag et al.

Summary: The present study used UPLC-MS and GC-MS to assess metabolite heterogeneity among four major Cinnamomum species. A new proanthocyanidin was identified for the first time in C. tamala, along with several glycosylated flavonoids and dicarboxylic fatty acids reported for the first time in cinnamon. Multivariate data analysis revealed differences in metabolite composition, including cinnamates, proanthocyanidins, dihydrocoumaroylglycosides, and coumarin, among the species. GC-MS analysis detected different primary metabolites, including sugars, fatty acids, and sugar alcohols, with true cinnamon from Malaysia suggested as a good sugar source for diabetic patients.

Protective and therapeutic effects of the flavonoid pinocembrin in indomethacin-induced acute gastric ulcer in rats: impact of anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic mechanisms

Aya A. El-Demerdash et al.

Summary: The study investigated the protective and therapeutic effects of pinocembrin (PINO) against indomethacin (INDO)-induced gastric ulcer in rats. Results showed that PINO promoted mucus secretion, decreased ulcer index, and inhibited histopathological changes induced by INDO. PINO also attenuated INDO-induced oxidative and inflammatory responses by downregulating mRNA expression level of p38-MAPK and inhibiting NF-kappa B activation. Additionally, PINO inhibited apoptotic activity by downregulating caspase-3 transcription. These findings suggest that PINO has promising therapeutic activity against INDO-induced gastric ulcer due to its anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic effects.
