Direct ink writing of polyimide/bacterial cellulose composite aerogel for thermal insulation

Zhuocheng Ma et al.

Summary: Polyimide (PI) aerogels, known for their high porosity, low density, thermal insulation and mechanical strength, have potential applications in aerospace vehicle, intelligent driving and batteries. Traditional molding process limits the practical use of PI aerogels, while 3D printing faces challenges like complex support structures and high thermal conductivity. Here, water-based polyamic acid (PAA)/bacterial cellulose (BC) ink is developed for direct ink writing (DIW) of PI/BC aerogels with improved properties compared to molded ones, making them suitable for thermal insulation in complex structures in fields like buildings and petro-chemical engineering.

3D Printing of Thermal Insulating Polyimide/Cellulose Nanocrystal Composite Aerogels with Low Dimensional Shrinkage

Summary: The study explores a novel method for preparing high-performance PI aerogels using renewable nanomaterials like cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). By dispersing CNCs in an aqueous solution of polyamic acid ammonium salts (PAAS) for direct ink writing (DIW), porous PI/CNC composite aerogels with enhanced mechanical strength were successfully produced. The presence of PAAS reduced the concentration of CNCs needed for DIW, and the physical network of CNCs improved the shape-fidelity of the aerogels during preparation. Overall, the composite aerogels exhibit low thermal conductivity and show promise as heat management materials.

Exceptional Packing Density of Ammonia in a Dual-Functionalized Metal-Organic Framework

Christopher Marsh et al.

Summary: In this study, a robust Al-based metal-organic framework, MFM-303(Al), was reported to show reversible adsorption of ammonia up to 9.9 mmol g(-1), attributed to the presence of free carboxylic acid and hydroxyl groups. The acidic sites within the framework played a critical role in immobilizing NH3 molecules, resulting in exceptional packing density. Breakthrough experiments demonstrated the excellent performance of MFM-303(Al) in capturing NH3 at low concentrations under both dry and wet conditions.
