Elucidating gut microbiota and metabolite patterns shaped by goat milk-based infant formula feeding in mice colonized by healthy infant feces

Qingxue Chen et al.

Summary: The study examined the differences in gut microbiota and metabolism regulation between cow milk-based, goat milk-based, mix milk-based infant formulas and pasteurized human milk. The results showed that goat milk-based formula selectively increased the abundance of specific bacteria in the gut. Metabolomics analysis revealed emphasis on certain metabolic pathways in goat milk-based formula. There was also a deficiency of certain bacteria in all formula-fed infants compared to those fed with pasteurized human milk. This study provides insights into the improvement and application of goat milk-based infant formulas in terms of intestinal microecology.

Synergistic alleviation effects of anchovy hydrolysates-catechin on scopolamine-induced mice memory deficits: the exploration of the potential relationship among gut-brain-axis

Tiantian Zhao et al.

Summary: Anchovy protein hydrolysates (APH) and catechin (CA) have been shown to improve memory. This study investigated the effects of APH-CA conjugates on memory enhancement, gut microbiota, fecal metabolites, and neurotransmitters in mice. The results showed that APH-CA regulated various biomarkers and had better alleviating effects than APH and CA alone. The study also revealed possible connections between gut microbiota, fecal metabolites, and brain neurotransmitters. These findings suggest that the regulation of the microbiota-metabolites-brain-neurotransmitters axis may be one of the mechanisms for the cognitive enhancement effects of APH-CA, and the synergic effects of APH and CA were partially confirmed.

Microbiome-metabolome responses of Fuzhuan brick tea crude polysaccharides with immune-protective benefit in cyclophosphamide-induced immunosuppressive mice

Yujiao Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the immune-protective effect of polysaccharides from Fuzhuan brick tea (FBTPs) in immunosuppressive mice. The results showed that FBTPs improved immune responses and reduced oxidative stress in the mice. Microbiota analysis revealed that FBTPs restored microbial dysbiosis and metabolomics analysis found altered metabolites involved in immune responses and energy supply. These findings provide insights into the immune-protective effect of FBTPs on regulating intestinal microbiota and metabolism.

Modulation of the Gut Microbiota and Glycometabolism by a Probiotic to Alleviate Amyloid Accumulation and Cognitive Impairments in AD Rats

Yuanwang Wang et al.

Summary: Regulating the gut microecology with probiotics is an effective strategy for the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study demonstrates that a functional probiotic, Lactobacillus plantarum MA2, isolated from traditional Chinese Tibetan kefir grains, can improve cognitive deficits and anxiety-like behaviors in AD rats. It also attenuates neuronal degeneration and Aβ accumulation in the brain. Furthermore, the study shows that MA2 alleviates intestinal mucosal impairments and inhibits microglia activation and neuroinflammation through the TLR4/MYD88/NLRP3 signaling pathway. The findings suggest that MA2 reshapes the gut microbiota and modulates glycometabolism, and its exopolysaccharides (EPS) have inhibitory effects on Aβ aggregation and cytotoxicity induced by amyloid.

Polyacetylenes in herbal medicine: A comprehensive review of its occurrence, pharmacology, toxicology, and pharmacokinetics (2014-2021)

Qi Xie et al.

Summary: Polyacetylenes are small active compounds with carbon-carbon triple bond that widely exist in plants. They have diverse biofunctions such as tumor suppression, immunity regulation, depression resistance, and neural protection. This review systematically and comprehensively reconstructs data on the occurrence, pharmacology, toxicology, and pharmacokinetics of polyacetylenes from herbal medicine, aiming to support their curative potential and healthcare properties. Polyacetylenes have been found to possess multiple biological activities, including antitumor, immunomodulatory, neuroprotective, and anti-depression activities. As important bioactive components of herbal medicine, polyacetylenes show pharmacological curative potential against carcinomas, inflammatory responses, central nervous system disorders, endocrine disorders, and microbial infections. However, further research on the toxicity, pharmacokinetics, and molecular mechanisms of polyacetylenes is still limited and needs to be conducted intensively.

FXR activation protects against NAFLD via bile-acid-dependent reductions in lipid absorption

Bethan L. Clifford et al.

Summary: FXR agonists are used to treat NAFLD by controlling hepatic lipid absorption and fatty acid synthesis, specifically reducing levels of MUFA and PUFA in the liver. This reduction is mediated by repression of specific genes and is independent of other regulatory factors like SHP and SREBP1c. Additionally, tissue-specific FXR KO mice studies show that hepatic FXR controls lipogenic genes while intestinal FXR controls lipid absorption.

Red ginseng has stronger anti-aging effects compared to ginseng possibly due to its regulation of oxidative stress and the gut microbiota

Xiaojuan Peng et al.

Summary: The study found that red ginseng (RG) is more effective in delaying D-Gal-induced aging process compared to Panax ginseng (PG), possibly due to the presence of higher levels of total polyphenols, rare ginsenosides, and non-starch polysaccharides in RG.
