Polydorid species (Annelida: Spionidae) associated with commercially important oyster shells and their shell infestation along the coast of Normandy, in the English Channel, France

Waka Sato-Okoshi et al.

Summary: Polydorid species inhabiting the shells of commercially important oysters in Normandy, France were investigated, and eight species were identified based on morphological, molecular biological, and ecological characteristics. Five of the identified species were new records for Normandy, and two were the first records in European waters. The study revealed the distribution and characteristics of these polydorid species in oyster shells.

Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA): Strategic model for sustainable mariculture in Samanco Bay, Peru

Romulo E. Loayza-Aguilar et al.

Summary: The development of industrial mariculture in Peruvian coasts will continue to grow but its monospecific nature has negative impacts on the ecosystem, biodiversity, and fishery resources. To address these issues, a sustainable production model called Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) is proposed for Argopecten purpuratus cultivation in Samanco Bay. This model aims to achieve greater efficiency, competitiveness, and profitability while ensuring environmental balance. The adoption of this model can be adapted to other scenarios, and collaboration between academia, private companies, and relevant authorities is crucial in this process.

Trophic interactions and metal transfer in marine ecosystems driven by the Peruvian scallop Argopecten purpuratus aquaculture

Ivan Loaiza et al.

Summary: The study reveals a southward increased gradient of delta N-15 along the Peruvian coast and trophic magnification effects of As and Cd at certain locations. In the Peruvian marine food webs, both metal biomagnification and non-biomagnification effects were found, with A. purpuratus consistently fitting the trophic metal magnification or bio-dilution regression models as an intermediate consumer or prey.

Envenoming by a Marine Blood Worm (Glycera)

Daniela M. Durkin et al.

Summary: Bites from venomous marine annelid 'bloodworms' have not been described in medical literature. Laboratory studies have found that their venom contains proteolytic enzymes and neurotoxins used for predation and defense. This report describes a case of symptomatic envenoming in a marine ecologist bitten while conducting field research, showing rapid onset of pain, swelling, and numbness at the bite site.

Food and Ornament: Use of Shellfish at Ifri Oudadane, a Holocene Settlement in NE Morocco

Rainer Hutterer et al.

Summary: Excavations of Ifri Oudadane in NW Morocco uncovered rich marine and terrestrial fauna, with shellfish remains revealing a diverse range of species used for food and possibly tools or ornaments. Evidence of systematic butchering of shellfish, such as topshells, was found, with different methods observed in Epipaleolithic and Neolithic levels.
