COVID-19 moderates the association between to-metro and by-metro accessibility and house prices

Linchuan Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of metro accessibility on house prices in Chengdu, China, and the moderating role of COVID-19. The results show that metro accessibility significantly influences house prices, while COVID-19 has a marginal effect on the relationship. Specifically, smaller or lower-priced houses are less affected by the pandemic compared to bigger or higher-priced houses.

Time-varying and non-linear associations between metro ridership and the built environment

Linchuan Yang et al.

Summary: The metro plays a crucial role in urban transportation systems. Understanding the relationship between metro ridership and the built environment is important for transit-oriented development planning. This study, using data from Chengdu (China), explores the complex association of metro ridership with the built environment during different times of day. The results show non-linearity and temporal heterogeneity in this association, and identify key predictors for metro ridership.

Exploring nonlinear effects of built environment on jogging behavior using random forest

Yong Liu et al.

Summary: This study explores the non-linear effects of the built environment on outdoor jogging fitness. The quantity and accessibility of facilities have a significant impact on the predictive power of the models. Distance to park, distance to track, and population density show U-shaped effects on the volume of jogging trips and origins/destinations. The findings emphasize the need for environmental interventions to promote physical activity.

Explainable heat-related mortality with random forest and SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) models

Yesuel Kim et al.

Summary: Climate change-induced heat increase has worsened the urban heat environment, damaging human health and resulting in heat-related mortality. Developing effective forecasting tools is crucial in responding to heat-related damage. However, accurately predicting heatwave damage is challenging in regions with varying conditions in a city due to diverse distribution of climatic, demographic, and socioeconomic sectors across local areas. In this study, a random forest-based model was developed to estimate the occurrence of heat-related mortality within a city's detailed spatial unit. The model achieved accuracy, F1-score, and AUC values of 90.3%, 94.75%, and 86% respectively through hyperparameter optimization. The interpretation of the model's estimation results from both global and local perspectives revealed that demographic, socioeconomic, and climatic sectors contributed the most to the estimation process. This study is the first to explore partial scenarios of heat-related mortality through the development and interpretation of a spatial unit machine learning-based occurrence estimation model.

Summary: This study examines the non-linear relationships between the built environment and functional ability of older adults, as well as the gender differences, in a typical aging Chinese society of Hong Kong. The results indicate that non-linear relationships exist between the built environment and functional ability in both gender groups, but the effects differ between males and females. This study provides valuable insights for governments to implement gender-based urban planning for healthy aging.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of the built environment on physical activity in the central city area of Chengdu, China, using crowdsourcing data and convolutional neural networks. The findings show that there are spatial variations in the effects of built environment factors on cycling and running activities. The green view index and sky view index have positive impacts on physical activity, while the road view index has mixed effects. Recommendations for promoting physical activity are proposed based on the empirical findings.

More than walking and cycling: What is 'active travel'?

Simon Cook et al.

Summary: In this paper, the concept of active travel is explored through a systematic review of research in the last 15 years. The authors suggest expanding the definition of active travel to include other modes of transportation that involve sustained physical exertion. A thematic review is provided to discuss the implications and characteristics of these wider active modes. The paper concludes with a discussion on the potential implications of this expanded definition for policy, practice, and research in transportation.
