Larval dispersal patterns and connectivity of Acropora on Florida's Coral Reef and its implications for restoration

Samantha King et al.

Summary: Since the 1980s, the populations of Acropora cervicornis and A. palmata have declined significantly due to disease and human activities. This study used larval survival and competency data to model the dispersal patterns of these coral species along Florida's Coral Reef. The results indicate that selective spatial restoration can stimulate natural recovery, and the model can be used to guide the management and restoration of genotypically diverse Acropora populations.

Biophysical models resolution affects coral connectivity estimates

Antoine Saint-Amand et al.

Summary: Estimating connectivity between coral reefs is essential for conservation efforts. Researchers assessed the impact of biophysical models resolution on connectivity estimates and found that higher resolution models produced more complex dispersal patterns with weaker connections. Fine-resolution models showed larger clusters of well-connected reefs and increased local retention. As a result, reef management recommendations should be made at scales coarser than the model resolution, not exceeding about 500 m.

Sea Level Rise and the Great Barrier Reef: The Future Implications on Reef Tidal Dynamics

Eleanor E. Mawson et al.

Summary: Predicted sea-level rise will impact tidal dynamics in coral reef systems and potentially alter coastal flood risk. Future management plans should consider changes in tidal range and increased extreme weather conditions to protect coral reefs and coastal areas.

Cumulative bleaching undermines systemic resilience of the Great Barrier Reef

Mandy W. M. Cheung et al.

Summary: Climate change and ENSO have triggered multiple mass coral bleaching events on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, leading to disruptions in coral connectivity. The increasing coverage and intensity of thermal stress have resulted in significant larval supply loss, impacting ecosystem resilience. Management strategies should consider the existence of thermal refugia to mitigate climate-driven disturbances and enhance coral reef conservation efforts.

Reconnecting reef recovery in a world of coral bleaching

Peter J. Mumby et al.

Summary: The article discusses a tactical response to coral bleaching events that aims to identify the most important reefs for driving imminent recovery. By focusing on critical sources of coral larvae supply, the algorithm proposed can help managers target finite management resources effectively for facilitating natural processes of recovery.

Global storm tide modeling with ADCIRC v55: unstructured mesh design and performance

William J. Pringle et al.

Summary: This paper details numerical improvements made to the ADCIRC model for more accurate and efficient global storm tide simulations, with a focus on seamless local mesh refinement. The study demonstrates the importance of refining resolution based on topographic seabed gradients and utilizing a global mesh design with a small MinEle for accurate results. The new numerical treatment significantly improves computational performance compared to previous versions of ADCIRC, allowing for larger time steps and faster simulations.
