The digital layer: alternative data for regional and innovation studies

Milad Abbasiharofteh et al.

Summary: This study explores the use of relational web data to address the lack of large-scale data on firm interactions. By constructing a Digital Layer dataset from scraping hyperlinks, the authors demonstrate that the intensity and quality of firm hyperlinks are strongly associated with innovation capabilities. The findings have implications for evidence-based assessment of innovation policies in sectors and places.

In knowledge we trust: Learning-by-interacting and the productivity of inventors

Matteo Tubiana et al.

Summary: The study found that the productivity of inventors is influenced by their interactions with colleagues, organizational colleagues, and geographically co-located peers. Metropolitan knowledge is crucial for inventors' productivity, while network knowledge of firms and colleagues is less relevant. When accounting for the complexity and quality of knowledge, proximate social interactions become central.

The new paradigm of economic complexity

Pierre-Alexandre Balland et al.

Summary: Economic complexity is a powerful paradigm for understanding key societal issues and challenges. It analyzes the interactions within an economy to grasp various socioeconomic processes. This emerging field relies on big data and machine learning techniques and has gained recognition from international institutions. Additionally, economic complexity offers insights to improve prediction and political decision-making.

Do EU regions benefit from Smart Specialisation principles?

David L. Rigby et al.

Summary: Smart Specialisation is a framework that aims to identify new growth paths connected to knowledge cores within regions. Recent research suggests that cities in the European Union with larger gains in complex and related technologies have a higher economic performance. This research tracks the development of technology in EU cities since 1980.
