Quantum field theoretical framework for the electromagnetic response of graphene and dispersion relations with implications to the Casimir effect

G. L. Klimchitskaya et al.

Summary: We obtained the spatially nonlocal response functions of graphene using quantum field theory. At zero temperature, the longitudinal permittivity is a regular function, while the transverse permittivity has a double pole for any nonzero wave vector. Both permittivities satisfy the dispersion relations and can be expressed along the imaginary frequency axis. We also found an additional term in the dispersion relations for the transverse permittivity due to the presence of a double pole, and the branch points on the real frequency axis do not affect the form of dispersion relations. The results are discussed in relation to the Lifshitz theory and a possible approach based on graphene is suggested.

Probing the response of metals to low-frequency s-polarized evanescent fields

G. L. Klimchitskaya et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an experimental test for the response function of metals to low-frequency s-polarized evanescent waves. By measuring the lateral component of the magnetic field of an oscillating magnetic dipole placed above a thick metallic plate, the test aims to differentiate between the Drude response function and the plasma response function. The paper also discusses possible applications of the obtained results.

Experimentum crucis for Electromagnetic Response of Metals to Evanescent Waves and the Casimir Puzzle

Galina L. Klimchitskaya et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the calculation differences in the Casimir force at large separations for metals described by different models, proposing an experiment to validate the response of metals to low-frequency evanescent waves. The results suggest that the lateral components of the magnetic field are influenced by transverse electric evanescent waves and may vary significantly depending on the model used for calculations and the oscillation frequency of the magnetic dipole, shedding light on the contradictions between the Drude model and high-precision measurements of the Casimir force.

Casimir-Polder attraction and repulsion between nanoparticles and graphene in out-of-thermal-equilibrium conditions

G. L. Klimchitskaya et al.

Summary: In this study, the nonequilibrium Casimir-Polder force between a nanoparticle and a graphene sheet kept at different temperatures was examined using the formalism of the polarization tensor in the framework of a Dirac model. The results demonstrate that the magnitude of the force increases with the temperature of the graphene sheet. The impact of nonequilibrium conditions on the force becomes smaller at larger separations. Our findings reveal that for a graphene sheet with a lower temperature than the environment, the attractive Casimir-Polder force vanishes at a specific separation distance and becomes repulsive at larger distances. This effect has potential applications in fundamental graphene research and force control in bioelectronic microdevices.

Intermediate-Range Casimir-Polder Interaction Probed by High-Order Slow Atom Diffraction

C. Garcion et al.

Summary: At nanometer separation, the dominant interaction between an atom and a material surface is the fluctuation-induced Casimir-Polder potential. Slow atoms crossing a silicon nitride transmission nanograting are a remarkably sensitive probe for that potential, with a discernible 15% difference between nonretarded and retarded potentials at distances smaller than 51 nm. The study discusses the relative influence of various theoretical and experimental parameters on the potential in detail, paving the way for high-precision measurement of the Casimir-Polder potential for applications in quantum-enhanced sensing.

Indirect interactions of metal nanoparticles through graphene

Li-Wei Huang et al.

Summary: This study utilized ultra-high vacuum electron microscopy to investigate the interaction of metal nanoparticles through graphene. The experimental results showed that there is an attractive or repelling interaction between nanoparticles in different metal systems. Theoretical calculations suggest that this phenomenon is related to the electron affinity of metals.

The Low-Temperature Expansion of the Casimir-Polder Free Energy of an Atom with Graphene

Nail Khusnutdinov et al.

Summary: The study investigated the low-temperature expansion of the Casimir-Polder free energy for an atom and graphene using the Poisson representation. The analysis extended to different relations between chemical potential mu and mass gap parameter m, with a focus on the dependence of graphene conductivities on mu and m. Results revealed the thermal correction for mu>m resembling T-2, and differing behavior for mu<m or mu

Summary: This paper reviews the complicated problems in Lifshitz theory describing the Casimir force between real material plates made of metals and dielectrics. Experimental data exclude the theoretical Casimir forces calculated within the framework of Lifshitz theory, leading to the proposal of various approaches to resolve this issue.

Experimental and theoretical investigation of the thermal effect in the Casimir interaction from graphene

M. Liu et al.

Summary: The experimental results show that the polarization tensor of graphene can well describe the Casimir force gradient between an Au-coated hollow glass microsphere and a graphene-coated fused silica plate, while also excluding the theoretical predictions at zero temperature. The study also found a correlation between the thermal correction to the Casimir force gradient and factors such as substrate, energy gap, and chemical potential.

Dynamical polarizability of graphene with spatial dispersion

Tao Zhu et al.

Summary: In this work, different theoretical approaches were used to analyze the electronic polarizability of graphene. It was found that the tight-binding method is as effective as the ab initio approach in calculating the polarizability of graphene. The special Dirac-cone band structure of graphene allows the Dirac model to reproduce results of the tight-binding method for energy smaller than 3 eV.

Casimir-Polder Interaction of an Atom with a Cavity Wall Made of Phase-Change Material out of Thermal Equilibrium

Galina L. Klimchitskaya et al.

Summary: This study investigates the out-of-thermal-equilibrium Casimir-Polder interaction between atoms and a cavity wall made of sapphire coated with vanadium dioxide film. Numerical computations show that the use of phase-change wall material significantly increases the force magnitude and gradient, compared to using a dielectric wall.
