The role of aquafeeds in abalone nutrition and health: A comprehensive review

Natalia Bullon et al.

Summary: Due to overpopulation and pressure on land resources, aquaculture production has been increased. New aquafeed technologies have been developed to meet the demand, aiming to reduce pressure on wild fisheries and minimize environmental effects. Previous studies mainly focused on abalone growth and nutrient utilization, while more holistic research is needed to develop feeds with integrated nutrition and health benefits.

Effects of dietary methionine on growth and body composition, indicators of digestion, protein metabolism and immunity, and resistance to heat stress of abalone Haliotis discus hannai

Hao Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of dietary methionine on growth, protein metabolism, immunity, and resistance to heat stress of abalone. The results showed that an appropriate level of dietary methionine could improve the growth, protein synthesis, immunity, and resistance to heat stress of abalone.

Comparative evaluation on the effects of dietary docosahexaenoic acid on growth performance, fatty acid profile and lipid metabolism in two sizes of abalone Haliotis discus hannai Ino

Chang Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of different levels of dietary docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) on growth performance, fatty acid profile, and lipid metabolism in abalone were compared. The optimal dietary DHA content for large and small abalone was estimated to be 1.32% and 0.88%, respectively, based on weight gain rate (WGR). DHA supplementation increased digestive enzymes' activity, polyunsaturated fatty acids content, and n-3/n-6 PUFA ratio in abalone.

Combined effects of ocean warming and acidification on the larval stages of the European abalone Haliotis tuberculata

Javid Kavousi et al.

Summary: This study examined the physiological responses of Haliotis tuberculata larvae to combined temperature and pH, and found that low pH affected tissue organogenesis and shell formation, while high temperature influenced the proportion of shelled larvae and their settlement ability.

Interactions of dietary eicosapentaenoic acid and vitamin C on growth performance, anti-oxidation and muscle quality of abalone Haliotis discus hannai Ino

Wanxiu Rao et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of dietary EPA and VC on the growth performance, anti-oxidation, and muscle quality of abalone. Both EPA and VC had significant effects on the weight gain rate (WGR) of abalone, with EPA showing a stronger influence. Interaction effects were observed between EPA and VC on various parameters, such as SOD activity and the contents of fatty acids and compounds in muscle.

Selenium nanoparticles and omega-3 fatty acid enhanced thermal tolerance in fish against arsenic and high temperature

Neeraj Kumar et al.

Summary: The addition of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) along with selenium nanoparticles (Se-NPs) to the diet significantly improved the thermal tolerance of Pangasianodon hypophthalmus under high temperature and arsenic stress. This supplementation reduced oxidative stress, enhanced ATPase activity, and reduced arsenic bioaccumulation.

Effects of dietary chromium yeast and astaxanthin on the growth performance, anti-oxidative capacity, and resistance to heat stress of abalone Haliotis discus hannai

Shuoli Ma et al.

Summary: The study found that dietary supplementation of chromium yeast (CrYst) significantly improved the growth performance of abalone, while astaxanthin (ASTA) had no significant effects on growth. Additionally, adding CrYst and/or ASTA enhanced the anti-oxidative capacity of abalone and reduced mortality during heat stress.

Transcriptome analysis reveals the molecular mechanisms of heterosis on thermal resistance in hybrid abalone

Qizhen Xiao et al.

Summary: The study confirmed heterosis in thermal tolerance of interspecific hybrid abalone (SD) through Arrhenius break temperatures (ABT) of cardiac performance. RNA-Sequencing revealed significantly diverged alternative splicing events in response to heat stress in three abalone species, with SD showing the highest number. The enrichment analysis of KEGG pathways suggested that genes involved in protein processing in the endoplasmic reticulum, mitophagy, and NF-kappa B signaling pathway may play a crucial role in the thermal resistance of hybrid abalone.
