Salinity impacts on irrigation water-scarcity in food bowl regions of the US and Australia

Josefin Thorslund et al.

Summary: This study develops a salinity-inclusive water scarcity framework for the irrigation sector, and applies it to the Central Valley in California and the Murray-Darling basin in Australia. The results show severe water scarcity in both regions, especially during the summer seasons. The study also explores the potential of alleviating water scarcity through conjunctive use of surface water and groundwater, but highlights the risks of groundwater depletion in certain sub-basins.

Mapping global hotspots and trends of water quality (1992-2010): a data driven approach

Sebastien Desbureaux et al.

Summary: Clean water is crucial for sustainable development, but the lack of monitoring data hampers our understanding of global water quality issues. By utilizing a data-driven approach, we are able to accurately estimate surface water quality worldwide and identify variations in water quality across different countries and pollutants.

Current wastewater treatment targets are insufficient to protect surface water quality

Edward R. Jones et al.

Summary: The quality of global water resources is under pressure from socio-economic developments and climate change. Achieving SDG6.3 targets for wastewater treatment is insufficient to improve water quality to desired thresholds in regions with limited existing treatment.

Distribution and characteristics of wastewater treatment plants within the global river network

Heloisa Ehalt Macedo et al.

Summary: The main objective of wastewater treatment plants is to remove pollutants from wastewater before it is discharged into waterbodies. However, these plants cannot remove all contaminants, making them concentrated sources of residual pollution. Detailed information about these plants, including their locations and characteristics, is crucial for understanding the impact of their discharges and improving their management. A global database, called HydroWASTE, has been developed to provide information on over 58,000 wastewater treatment plants worldwide.

Global water scarcity including surface water quality and expansions of clean water technologies

Michelle T. H. van Vliet et al.

Summary: Global water scarcity is influenced by both water quantity and quality issues, and increasing investment in clean water technologies is crucial to reduce the number of people affected. Considering water quality factors can raise the percentage of population suffering from severe water scarcity in heavily affected regions. Excessive water withdrawals and polluted return flows contribute to water scarcity and degraded water quality in severe water scarcity regions. Expanding desalination and treated wastewater reuse can effectively alleviate water scarcity levels in Asia, but potential side effects must be carefully considered.

Globally observed trends in mean and extreme river flow attributed to climate change

Lukas Gudmundsson et al.

Summary: The study analyzed global river flow data from 7250 observatories and found that anthropogenic climate change has an impact on river flow. The research showed that some regions are consistently experiencing drying trends, while others are consistently experiencing wetting trends.

Increasingly severe cyanobacterial blooms and deep water hypoxia coincide with warming water temperatures in reservoirs

Nathan J. Smucker et al.

Summary: The study found that cyanobacteria cell densities in temperate reservoirs in the USA began to rapidly increase after 2003-2005, with some watersheds posing high human health risks due to these increases. This trend seems to be associated with warmer climate conditions, impacting even watersheds mostly covered by forests.

Country-level and gridded estimates of wastewater production, collection, treatment and reuse

Edward R. Jones et al.

Summary: Continuously improving and affordable wastewater management can reduce pollution, increase clean water supply, and promote sustainable development. There are significant differences in wastewater production and treatment levels across different geographical regions and economic development levels globally.
