Understanding the superior mechanical properties of hollow-strut metal lattice materials

H. Z. Zhong et al.

Summary: Intricate hollow-strut metal lattice materials, enabled by additive manufacturing, exhibit superior strength and stiffness compared to their solid-strut counterparts of the same density. Analyzed using various models, it is revealed that the hollow-strut lattice structures provide higher resistance to bending, resulting in increased mechanical properties. These materials offer lightweight design options with improved performance at the same or lower density than solid-strut metal lattices.

Compressive performance and energy absorption of additively manufactured metallic hybrid lattice structures

Lijun Xiao et al.

Summary: A hybrid lattice cell configuration combining an octet cell and a rhombic dodecahedron (RD) cell was proposed to achieve superior mechanical performance and energy absorption capacity. Experimental and numerical results demonstrated that the hybrid structure outperforms the individual octet and RD lattice structures in terms of energy absorption, and its performance can be further enhanced by tuning the mesoscopic architectures.

Coupled effect of microstructure and topology on the mechanical behavior of Inconel718 additively manufactured lattices

S. Banait et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanical behavior of LPBF-manufactured Inconel718 lattices with different microstructures and test conditions. It was found that precipitation led to a transition in the mechanical behavior of the lattices and contributed to their strengthening. High temperature deformation resulted in a decrease in the lattice yield strength and the ductility of the base material.
