Enhanced Two-Way Communication for Battery-Free Wireless Sensors: SWIPT with IM3 Backscattering

Summary: This study presents a RF-powered sub-1 GHz sensor node using modulated packages, without the need for any DC-DC power management circuitry and with a sensitivity below 0 dBm. The research shows that different data rates of modulation have minimal influence on the RF-DC power conversion efficiency. A miniaturized rectenna is demonstrated to charge a supercapacitor, powering a sub-1 GHz sensor node for over 32 s, with an over an order of magnitude improvement in sensitivity compared to previous works harvesting modulated packets.
