Mechanical nanolattices printed using nanocluster-based photoresists

Qi Li et al.

Summary: This study reports a strategy for the rapid nanoprinting of complex structural nanocomposites using metal nanoclusters. The ultrasmall, quantum-confined nanoclusters function as two-photon activators and precursors for mechanical reinforcements and nanoscale porogens. Complex 3D nanocomposites and structures with tunable nanoporosity are printed using this method. The nanocluster-polymer nanolattices exhibit high specific strength, energy absorption, deformability, and recoverability. This framework provides a generalizable, versatile approach for the use of photoactive nanomaterials in additive manufacturing of complex systems with emergent mechanical properties.

Additive manufacturing of micro-architected metals via hydrogel infusion

Max A. Saccone et al.

Summary: Metal additive manufacturing enables the production of high value and high performance components through layer-by-layer fabrication. A new technique called vat photopolymerization (VP) is introduced, which allows the production of metals and alloys with microscale resolution. This technique does not require reoptimization of resins and curing parameters for different materials, enabling quick fabrication and compositional tuning.

Metal Hydroxide Salt Monolayer Nanoparticles: Synthesis, Redox Characterization, and Electrochemical Catalytic Performance

Naoki Tarutani et al.

Summary: Two-dimensional materials modified with low molecular weight species exhibit unique electronic properties. In this study, metal hydroxide salt monolayer nanoparticles were synthesized and modified with different molecules to enhance their electrochemical functions. The synthesized nickel hydroxide carbonate monolayer nanoparticles modified with short alkylcarboxylate showed improved redox processes and electrochemical functions due to higher proton diffusion coefficient, lower electron transfer resistance, and improved intrinsic catalytic activity.

Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Nanocrystal-based Cryogels with Size-Controlled Mesopores and Macropores

Naoki Tarutani et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the template-free synthesis of nanocrystal-based porous materials, where the polymerization of acrylates encourages interconnection of nanocrystals and formation of homogeneous gel networks. The resulting cryogels have pores with size-tailored diameters, ranging from mesoscale to macroscale, and the surface characteristics of starting nanocrystals play a role in determining the porous structures. This research can pave the way for the design of template-free nanocrystal-based porous materials.
