Association of xenobiotic-metabolizing genes polymorphisms with cervical cancer risk in the Tunisian population

Ahlem Helaoui et al.

Summary: This study found that the interaction between host genetic characteristics and environmental factors plays a crucial role in the development of cervical cancer. Functional genetic variants of xenobiotic-metabolizing genes (AhR, CYP1A1, GSTM1, and GSTT1) are significantly associated with increased cervical cancer risk.

Host Genotype Links to Salivary and Gut Microbiota by Periodontal Status

Y. Kurushima et al.

Summary: Limited evidence is available on how host genetic variants affect microbiota composition. This study examines the associations between candidate host genetic variants and microbial composition in saliva and gut. The findings suggest that certain genetic variants are associated with microbial diversity and composition, and periodontal status may drive variations in the microbiota.

Polymorphisms in Genes Involved in Inflammation and Periodontitis: A Narrative Review

Aniela Brodzikowska et al.

Summary: Genetic factors play a significant role in the variability of periodontitis traits in humans. Different allelic variants can affect tissue structure, antibody responses, and inflammatory mediators, acting as protective or risk factors for periodontal diseases. Identifying genes associated with periodontitis can be used for risk assessment.

A20 controls RANK-dependent osteoclast formation and bone physiology

Arne Martens et al.

Summary: The anti-inflammatory protein A20 plays a critical role in inhibiting NF-kappa B signaling and inflammation. Deficiency of A20 can lead to osteoporosis without causing inflammatory arthritis. A20 regulates RANK-induced NF-kappa B signaling through its specific domains, controlling osteoclast differentiation and bone development.

The Ubiquitin System and A20: Implications in Health and Disease

E. C. Mooney et al.

Summary: Inflammation is triggered by innate sensors, and immune cell activation is a strictly regulated process supported by negative feedback mechanisms. Ubiquitination plays a critical role in regulating the immune system, with A20 serving as an important ubiquitin-editing enzyme in inflammation.

Oral biofilms revisited: A novel host tissue of bacteriological origin

Richard P. Darveau et al.

Summary: This volume of Periodontology 2000 explores the central theme that the microbial dental plaque biofilm, particularly the subgingival plaque biofilm, resembles human tissue in structure and function. It discusses how periodontitis disrupts the normal function of the healthy subgingival plaque biofilm, leading to excessive inflammation and tissue destruction.

Local and systemic mechanisms linking periodontal disease and inflammatory comorbidities

George Hajishengallis et al.

Summary: Periodontitis is causally linked to the development of other chronic inflammatory diseases outside the oral mucosa, and intervention studies have shown that local treatment of periodontitis can ameliorate surrogate markers of comorbid conditions. Experimental animal studies have further strengthened the potential causal link by establishing biologically plausible and clinically consistent mechanisms. Understanding the impact of disseminated periodontal pathogens and systemic inflammation associated with periodontitis on extra-oral pathologies may lead to new therapeutic options to reduce the risk of periodontitis-associated comorbidities.
