Revisiting volatility spillovers in the Gulf Cooperation Council

Salem Ziadat et al.

Summary: This research provides a comprehensive review of the volatility spillover patterns in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) stock market indexes and reveals a significant increase in the connectedness of returns and volatilities during the COVID-19 era in the GCC region. However, there were no significant changes in the directional patterns of volatility during the pandemic.

Do volatility spillover and hedging among GCC stock markets and global factors vary from normal to turbulent periods? Evidence from the global financial crisis and Covid-19 pandemic crisis

Imran Yousaf et al.

Summary: This paper examines the returns, asymmetric volatility spillovers, and time-varying correlations among GCC stock markets and five global factors using a bivariate VAR-asymmetric-BEKK-GARCH model. The findings indicate that there are significant return and volatility spillovers during turbulent periods, and gold serves as a safe haven for GCC stock markets.

Volatility spillover between economic sectors in financial crisis prediction: Evidence spanning the great financial crisis and Covid-19 pandemic

Ricardo Laborda et al.

Summary: This study quantifies volatility spillovers between sectors of economic activity in the United States using network connectivity measures, finding that Banking&Insurance, Energy, Technology, and Biotechnology sectors are the main channels through which shocks propagate to the rest of the economy, with different impacts during different crisis periods. Volatility spillovers also exhibit the ability to predict high episodes of volatility for the S&P 500 index.

What drives dynamic connectedness of the U.S equity sectors during different business cycles?

Geoffrey M. Ngene

Summary: The study reveals that the majority of volatility linkage is due to volatility transmissions among different sectors, with aggressive sectors sensitive to macroeconomic risk typically playing the role of volatility transmission, while defensive sectors largely immune to macroeconomic risk play the role of volatility receiving. The intensity and direction of volatility transmissions among sectors vary with economic expansion and recession periods.

The joint spillover index

William D. Lastrapes et al.

Summary: We propose an alternative measure of system-wide connectedness based on generalized forecast error variance decompositions, which relies on joint conditional forecasts. The application to US industry sector stock returns shows a substantial difference between our measure and the popular method in measuring aggregate spillovers.

Spillovers to sectoral equity returns: do liquidity and financial positions matter?

Faruk Balli et al.

Summary: This paper investigates spillovers from regional and global equity markets to sectoral equity indices for various regions/countries. The study finds that sector positions, liquidity, financial conditions, and market capitalization influence the extent of spillovers. Specifically, higher debt, lower interest expense coverage, and larger profit margins of sectors are associated with significant spillovers from regional and global markets.
