Experimental investigation of solar still productivity enhancement of distilled water by using natural fibers

AbedAlrzaq Alshqirate et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to enhance fresh water productivity by improving solar stills. The performance parameters of two solar stills were experimentally investigated, comparing a pyramid solar still with natural fiber and a conventional solar still. Natural fibers were inserted to increase evaporation rate and surface area exposed to sunray, resulting in increased water productivity. The daily accumulative freshwater productivity was 44.5% higher with natural fiber compared to the conventional still. The thermal energy efficiency, exergy efficiency, and cost of producing fresh water were also improved with natural fiber.

An experimental study on carbon-metal composite tablets as solar absorbers for water distiller performance improvement

Emad M. S. El-Said et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of reused carbon-metal composite tablets as solar absorbers to enhance the performance of solar still. The results show that these composite tablets improve thermal energy absorption, overall yield, energy efficiency, and cost reduction. Factors such as metal weight ratio, metal powder type, tablet configuration, and water depth were analyzed for their impact on system performance. The suggested modification enhances production rate, energy efficiency, and cost of the traditional distiller.

Experimental investigation of a developed tubular solar still with longitudinal wicked fins

Ibrahim Alatawi et al.

Summary: Water scarcity and desertification pose a real threat to many countries. Solar water desalination is a suitable solution for the future, but more research effort is needed. This study investigated the effect of adding vertical fins with wicks to a tubular solar still integrated with a parabolic concentrator solar tracking system. Field experiments in Saudi Arabia showed that this strategy significantly increased the device's yield and efficiency while reducing the production cost per liter of freshwater.

Enhancement the productivity of drum solar still utilizing parabolic solar concentrator, phase change material and nanoparticles' coating

Umar F. Alqsair et al.

Summary: This study aims to improve fresh water productivity from seawater or brackish water utilizing renewable energies by a solar desalination system. An experimental study was conducted to improve the performance of the drum solar still (DSS) using transparent walls of SS, a parabolic solar concentrator (PSC), phase change material (PCM), nanoparticles' coating (NC), and an external condenser. The results showed that utilizing an external condenser and PCM-Ag mixture effectively solved the problem of high temperature of the glass, leading to a significant increase in DSS productivity. When using NC, PSC, and an external condenser, the DSS productivity was enhanced by around 320% with an efficiency of 72% at 0.3 rpm.

Summary: Solar water distillation is a simple and low-cost method to obtain fresh water from brackish and seawater. This study demonstrates the use of Omani rock stone bed as a packing medium to improve the productivity of a solar still. The experimental results show that the solar still with the rock stone bed can increase productivity by 18.6% compared to a conventional still. The developed solar still is easy to build and maintain, and the approach can be implemented worldwide.
