Understanding CO2 adsorption mechanisms in porous adsorbents: A solid-state NMR survey

Daniel Pereira et al.

Summary: Global CO2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion reached a historic high of 36.3 gigatonnes in 2021, posing a significant environmental threat. The development of porous materials for gas storage and capture, particularly carbon capture and storage, has gained great interest due to its potential in mitigating atmospheric CO2 concentrations. Atomic-scale studies using spectroscopic techniques have been explored in the last 5 years to investigate the structure and molecular dynamics of CO2 species formed at porous surfaces, providing insights for the design of better CO2 adsorbents.

Evidence for Entropically Controlled Interfacial Hydration in Mesoporous Organosilicas

Hyunjin Moon et al.

Summary: In this study, the behavior of water at the interfaces of mesoporous silicas was controlled by modifying their thermal and chemical properties. The results showed that the decrease in surface polarity of inorganic silicas reduced the hydrogen-bonding of water and increased the surface water diffusivity. In contrast, the decrease in polarity of organosilicas decreased the surface water diffusivity, indicating enhanced hydrophobic hydration. These findings validate the control of hydrophobic hydration at interfaces by the microscopic length scale of the hydrophobic regions, and suggest that the hydration thermodynamics of silica surfaces can be tuned to promote adsorption and selectivity in catalytic reactions.

CO2 capture and CO2/CH4 separation by silicas with controlled porosity and functionality

Saphir Venet et al.

Summary: Microporous, mesoporous, and hydrophobic silica materials with high specific surface area were synthesized by an easy and cost-effective sol-gel method. The effect of pore size and water content on gas adsorption and separation was investigated. The study identified the optimal silica material with the highest CO2 adsorption capacity and separation performance.

CO2 Adsorption on the N- and P-Modified Mesoporous Silicas

Oyundari Tumurbaatar et al.

Summary: SBA-15 and MCM-48 mesoporous silicas were modified with functionalized (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) using the post-synthesis method, introducing N- and P-containing groups to the pore surface. The structure of the newly synthesized modifiers and their grafting onto the porous matrix were confirmed by multinuclear NMR and FTIR spectroscopies. The modified silicas exhibited enhanced CO2 adsorption capacity compared to the initial material, with stable performance observed over three adsorption/desorption cycles.

Summary: The isosteric enthalpy of adsorption of CO2 in three different micro and mesoporous materials was evaluated, revealing variations in the adsorption behavior of CO2 at different temperatures and materials. Physisorption dominates in CMF and SBA-15 materials, while chemisorption predominates in SBA-15_APTES, with the temperature significantly impacting the enthalpy of adsorption values.
