One-pot carboxyl enrichment fosters water-dispersibility of reduced graphene oxide: a combined experimental and theoretical assessment

Francesco Amato et al.

Summary: Graphene and its derivative, reduced graphene oxide (RGO), are attracting great interest due to their unique properties. However, the tendency of RGO to aggregate in water restricts its application. In this study, water-dispersible RGO was prepared through a novel method using graphene oxide (GO) enriched with additional carboxyl groups and followed by chemical reduction. The reactivity of GO with succinic anhydride was experimentally investigated and confirmed through various techniques. This method offers a sustainable and scalable approach for the preparation of water-dispersible RGO, which could have broad applications.

Understanding the nature of graphene oxide functional groups by modulation of the electrochemical reduction: A combined experimental and theoretical approach

Irene Ferrari et al.

Summary: This study investigates the nature and interactions of oxygen functional groups in graphene oxide, providing insights into their electrochemical reduction energetics. Chemical modifications of graphene oxide under controlled electrochemical reduction conditions were studied to understand the contribution of single reactive oxygen functional groups. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis and theoretical modeling were used to characterize the various carbonaceous species involved in the rich chemistry of graphene oxide.

Physicochemical transformation of graphene oxide during heat treatment at 110-200 °C

Sohan Bir Singh et al.

Summary: The water removal from graphene oxide (GO) was investigated through different heating pathways, and the physicochemical characteristics of GO samples at each stage were analyzed. It was found that direct and rapid heat treatment at 200°C is the most effective option for developing a porous structure.

Controlling covalent chemistry on graphene oxide

Shi Guo et al.

Summary: Graphene has remarkable physicochemical properties, but its low dispersibility and tendency to aggregate hinder its full exploitation. Graphene oxide (GO) is a promising substitute with high dispersibility and abundant oxygen-containing groups. However, the reactivity of GO and the lack of control in its derivatization pose challenges. This review discusses the chemical reactivity of GO, the obstacles in precise control of its functionalization, and future directions for improving GO chemistry control.

Controlling reduction degree of graphene oxide-based electrode for improving the sensing performance toward heavy metal ions

Theeazen AL-Gahouari et al.

Summary: The electrochemical reduction degrees of reduced graphene oxide-based electrodes greatly influence their electrochemical sensing performance towards heavy metal ions. By optimizing the reduction degree using cyclic voltammetry, the rGO6/GCE electrode showed significant improvements in stability, sensitivity, and oxidation potential definition for cadmium and lead ions, enabling simultaneous electrochemical detection under optimized conditions. The modified Bi/rGO6/GCE electrode demonstrated excellent stability, sensitivity, and detection limits for Cd2+ and Pb2+, leading to reliable and reproducible results within a linear range between 10 and 50 μg/L.

Enhanced graphitic domains of unreduced graphene oxide and the interplay of hydration behaviour and catalytic activity

Tobias Foller et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that the properties of graphene oxide (GO) can be improved by increasing its graphitic domain size through thermal diffusion and clustering of functional groups. The integrity of the functional groups during this process has been confirmed through comprehensive chemical analysis. Additionally, the sheet resistance of GO can be reduced by several orders of magnitude during mild thermal annealing.
