Investigation of Formalin-Fixed Tissue Optical Characteristics in the Range of 200-500 GHz Using Pulsed Terahertz Reflection Spectroscopy to Differentiate Oral Malignant, Benign, and Cyst

S. Stella Jenifer Isabella et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of Terahertz electromagnetic waves for diagnosing oral cancer. A case of formalin-fixed oral squamous cell carcinoma, ameloblastoma, and odontogenic keratocyst was examined using terahertz pulsed spectroscopy. The results showed that the malignant samples had higher absorption coefficient, refractive index, and extinction coefficient compared to the benign and cyst samples. The findings were validated using microscopic images. The study demonstrated that the terahertz signal consistently showed higher values in the malignant sample, indicating a response to cell density by eliminating the effect of water.

Terahertz Characterisation of Artificially Cultured Oral Cancer with Stem Cell Lines for Healthcare Applications

Shohreh Nourinovin et al.

Summary: Due to its asymptomatic properties, oral cancer is difficult to detect in the early stages. However, terahertz radiation has shown potential as a non-ionizing and non-invasive method for early cancer detection. This study focused on the electromagnetic properties of artificially cultured oral squamous cell carcinoma and found that it has higher refractive index and absorption coefficient compared to normal tissue. Understanding the optical parameters of artificial skin tissue can contribute to techniques for diagnosing and detecting tumors at an early stage.

Summary: This study enhances the accuracy of breast tumour margin delineation during conserving surgeries by combining refractive index and morphological dilation techniques, which has important clinical implications for breast-conserving surgeries. The results show that the combination of a wide structuring element and high refractive index improves tissue classification accuracy.
