Spin Wave Electromagnetic Nano-Antenna Enabled by Tripartite Phonon-Magnon-Photon Coupling

Raisa Fabiha et al.

Summary: This study investigates the tripartite coupling between phonons, magnons, and photons in a periodic array of elliptical magnetostrictive nanomagnets on a piezoelectric substrate to form a 2D two-phase multiferroic crystal. The phonons launch surface acoustic waves (SAW) that cause the spin-wave modes (magnons) within the nanomagnets to radiate electromagnetic waves (photons). This phonon-magnon-photon coupling is exploited to implement an extreme sub-wavelength electromagnetic antenna with significantly higher radiation efficiency and antenna gain compared to traditional antennas of the same size.

The Interaction between Surface Acoustic Waves and Spin Waves: The Role of Anisotropy and Spatial Profiles of the Modes

Nandan K. P. Babu et al.

Summary: The interaction between different types of wave excitation in hybrid systems is usually anisotropic. The magnetoelastic coupling between surface acoustic waves and spin waves strongly depends on the direction of the external magnetic field. However, this study shows that even if the field orientation supports the coupling, the magnetoelastic interaction may be significantly reduced for surface acoustic waves with a specific profile in the direction normal to the surface at distances much smaller than the wavelength.

Direct Imaging of Resonant Phonon-Magnon Coupling

Chenbo Zhao et al.

Summary: Detection of phonons is critical for research on the interconversion between resonantly coupled magnons and phonons. In this study, the resonant coupling of magnons and phonons was visualized by microfocused Brillouin light scattering. The results provide spatially resolved information about phonon manipulation and detection in a coupled magnon-phonon system.

Resonant amplification of intrinsic magnon modes and generation of new extrinsic modes in a two-dimensional array of interacting multiferroic nanomagnets by surface acoustic waves

Anulekha De et al.

Summary: Through the use of time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect (TR-MOKE) microscopy, a study demonstrated the amplification of intrinsic spin-wave (SW) modes and the generation of new extrinsic or driven modes in a densely packed two-dimensional array of elliptical Co nanomagnets fabricated on a piezoelectric LiNbO3 substrate induced by surface-acoustic-wave (SAW). The magnetoelastic coupling led to a variety of SW phenomena, with amplification of intrinsic modes and generation of new extrinsic modes observed when the SAW was launched along the major axis, while a dominant driven mode appeared when the SAW was launched along the minor axis.
