Microbial communities and sediment nitrogen cycle in a coastal eutrophic lake with salinity and nutrients shifted by seawater intrusion

Lijuan Feng et al.

Summary: In this study, the dynamics of microbial community and nitrogen cycle in sediment of a coastal eutrophic lake were investigated. The results showed that the increase in water salinity was positively correlated with bacterial diversity and nitrogen cycle-related bacteria activities in surface water. However, eukaryotic diversity in surface water was not influenced by salinity. In sediment, bacterial and eukaryotic diversity were higher than in water, with dominant phyla being Proteobacteria and Chloroflexi for bacteria, and Bacillariophyta, Arthropoda, and Chlorophyta for eukaryotes. Higher salinity caused by seawater intrusion enhanced denitrification, DNRA, and ammonification, while decreasing nitrogen fixation and assimilatory nitrogen reduction. The changes in dominant genes of narG, nirS, nrfA, ureC, nifA, and nirB were mainly attributed to changes in Proteobacteria and Chloroflexi.

Effect of extreme pH conditions on methanogenesis: Methanogen metabolism and community structure

Shuang Qiu et al.

Summary: The study comprehensively explored the responses of methanogenesis in granular sludge at various pH levels, revealing that extreme pH conditions inhibited methanogenesis by suppressing metabolic pathways, affecting microbial abundance and activity, and reducing enzyme activity and electron transport. The study also found that pH stress regulated energy metabolism and had varying effects on the secretion of proteins and carbohydrates in the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). This research provides insights into the mechanisms behind pH control-induced methanogenesis inhibition in the chain elongation fermentation system.

Discrepant impact of polyethylene microplastics on methane emissions from different paddy soils

Zihan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found that the presence of microplastics (MPs) significantly affects methane (CH4) emissions from paddy soils by inhibiting CH4 production or stimulating CH4 oxidation. However, it has negligible effects on soil carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and organic carbon degradation genes. These findings highlight the importance of considering MPs as an emerging environmental factor when estimating CH4 emissions from paddy fields.

Water level of inland saline wetlands with implications for CO2 and CH4 fluxes during the autumn freeze-thaw period in Northeast China

Weijie Wang et al.

Summary: This study revealed the characteristics of CO2 and CH4 fluxes in Zhalong saline wetlands at different water levels during the autumn freeze-thaw period and clarified the response of CO2 and CH4 fluxes to water levels. Water levels did not have a significant effect on cumulative CO2 release fluxes from wetlands, but they had a significant effect on wetland methane fluxes, with higher water levels resulting in higher CH4 fluxes.

Anaerobic methane oxidation linked to Fe(III) reduction in a Candidatus Methanoperedens-enriched consortium from the cold Zoige wetland at Tibetan Plateau

Lin Chen et al.

Summary: This study identified abundant Ca. Methanoperedens and iron in the cold Zoige wetland at Tibetan Plateau, proposing a novel species, Ca. Methanoperedens psychrophilus, which contains a full suite of CO2 reductive methanogenic genes and unique gene categories related to cold adaptability. This work reports the first evidence of a methanotroph performing anaerobic oxidation of methane in an alpine wetland.

Effects of different carbon sources on methane production and the methanogenic communities in iron rich flooded paddy soil

Dan Luo et al.

Summary: The study found that glucose and starch were more preferential substrates for liberating methane compared to acetate, with a faster rate. Nonanoate was unable to support methane production. Additionally, a significantly higher content of iron-reducing bacteria was observed in the glucose and starch treatments, and it was significantly positively correlated with the copy number of the methanogenic mcrA gene.

Methanogenic communities and methane emissions from enrichments of Brazilian Amazonia soils under land-use change

Kelly Jaqueline Alves et al.

Summary: This study investigated the composition and structure of bacterial and archaeal communities in tropical soils under different land-use changes, with a focus on the methanogenic communities. It was found that pastures harbor a richer and more responsive methanogenic community, suggesting that converting forest areas to pasture may increase methane emissions.

The effect of modified biochar on methane emission and succession of methanogenic archaeal community in paddy soil

Yue Lu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the method of using different modified biochars to improve CH4 emissions and associated archaea in rice paddy soil. The results showed that nitric acid-treated biochar significantly suppressed CH4 emissions and increased CO2 emissions in soil. Additionally, the addition of biochars inhibited the accumulation of acetate and H-2 in rice paddy soil. 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed that biochars amendment increased alpha-diversity of archaeal community and the modified biochars could mitigate the loss of alpha-diversity in the early stage of anaerobic incubation.

Increased soil moisture intensifies the impacts of forest-to-pasture conversion on methane emissions and methane-cycling communities in the Eastern Amazon

Andressa M. Venturini et al.

Summary: Climatic changes in the Amazon are affecting precipitation patterns and may impact soil methane emissions. This research investigates the effects of land use and moisture on the microbial methane cycle in the Eastern Brazilian Amazon. The results show that increased moisture exacerbates soil methane emissions and microbial responses driven by land-use change.

Summary: Forest succession significantly affects soil greenhouse gas fluxes by altering soil nutrient and soil environment/chemical properties. Seasonal and successional variations in soil greenhouse gas fluxes are influenced by soil and environmental factors. The study provides insights into the effects of forest succession on carbon and nitrogen budgets in boreal forest ecosystems.

Effects of Pig Manure and Its Organic Fertilizer Application on Archaea and Methane Emission in Paddy Fields

Jianqiang Wu et al.

Summary: This study found that manure application increased methane emissions in paddy fields. Both pig manure and organic fertilizer increased the relative abundance of methanogens and methane emission flux in paddy soil, with pig manure having a greater impact. The diversity and richness of soil archaea were less affected by manure application. Changes in soil environmental factors were found to affect the community composition of methanogens.

Active metabolic pathways of anaerobic methane oxidation in paddy soils

Lichao Fan et al.

Summary: Through the use of various methods such as isotope tracing and microbial community analysis, different pathways of anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) in paddy soils were identified, highlighting the impact of fertilization and alternative electron acceptors on the microbial community structure. These findings suggest a niche differentiation for AOM-involved microorganisms and the potential for nitrogen-driven AOM to become a more significant methane sink in the future.

The process of methanogenesis in paddy field sunder different elevated CO2 concentrations

Yuanyuan Wang et al.

Summary: Understanding the process of methanogenesis in paddy fields under different elevated CO2 concentrations is crucial for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In this study, we found that moderate increases in CO2 concentration can enhance methane flux in paddy fields. The abundance of methanogens is affected by CO2 concentration, with a significant decrease in relative abundance of uncultured genera under high CO2 concentrations.
