The immunostimulatory effects of Theobroma cacao L. pod husk extract via injection and dietary administrations on Macrobrachium rosenbergii and its resistance against Lactococcus garvieae

Hsin-Wei Kuo et al.

Summary: The extract from cocoa pod husk was found to enhance the immunity and disease resistance of Macrobrachium rosenbergii. Both injection and dietary methods showed significant improvement in non-specific immune parameters and disease resistance against Lactococcus garvieae.

Pectin from dry cacao pod husk mediates growth performance, immune resistance responses and carbohydrate metabolism of Litopenaeus vannamei through dietary administration

Hsin-Wei Kuo et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that feeding shrimp with diets containing CPH pectin significantly improves growth rate, feeding efficiency, and disease resistance. Within a certain dosage and time frame (3.0 g/kg and 56 days), CPH pectin acts as a regulator for shrimp neuroendocrine and immune responses, as well as carbohydrate metabolism, enhancing resistance against pathogens and hypothermal stress.

Molecular characterization and functional roles for Vibrio alginolyticus resistance of an octopamine/tyramine receptor of the white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei

Hsin-Wei Kuo et al.

Summary: Octopamine/Tyramine receptor plays an important role in the immune response of white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei. Its expression is upregulated under Vibrio alginolyticus infection and is functionally responsible for the observed immune response.

How do abiotic environmental conditions influence shrimp susceptibility to disease? A critical analysis focussed on White Spot Disease

Rebecca S. Millard et al.

Summary: White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) causes White Spot Disease (WSD) in shrimp, with environmental conditions such as temperature and salinity playing major roles in outbreak severity. Other water quality factors such as dissolved oxygen concentration, nitrogenous compound concentration, partial pressure of carbon dioxide, and pH may also affect susceptibility to WSSV. Understanding the impact of environmental conditions on shrimp susceptibility to WSSV is crucial for WSD mitigation, as current methods for prevention and treatment are ineffective.

Synbiotic combination of prebiotic, cacao pod husk pectin and probiotic, Lactobacillus plantarum, improve the immunocompetence and growth of Litopenaeus vannamei

Hsin-Wei Kuo et al.

Summary: The study found that the synbiotic combination of CPH pectin and LP significantly improved weight gain, length gains, feeding efficiency, and immune function in Litopenaeus vannamei. Shrimp fed with the synbiotics showed increased total haemocyte count, phenoloxidase activity, and respiratory bursts, as well as enhanced phagocytic activity and clearance efficiency in response to pathogen challenge. Additionally, shrimp receiving CPH pectin and/or LP treatments exhibited higher survival rates against infection and stress, indicating the immunostimulant effects of the additives.

Cloning and characterization of a key enzyme in octopaminergic pathway: Tyramine beta-hydroxylase from Litopenaeus vannamei, as expressed during Vibrio alginolytics infection and hypothermal stress

Hsin-Wei Kuo et al.

Summary: The study investigated the role of Tyramine beta-hydroxylase (TBH) in white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei, under hypothermal stress and Vibrio alginolyticus infection. It was found that LvTBH gene expression was upregulated, leading to increased release of octopamine (OA).
