Race, Racism, and Cardiovascular Health: Applying a Social Determinants of Health Framework to Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Cardiovascular Disease

Zulqarnain Javed et al.

Summary: Health care in the United States has made many innovations and successes in the past decades. However, the color of a person's skin still plays a significant role in determining their prospects of wellness and the quality of care they receive. Disparities in cardiovascular disease (CVD) serve as a stark reminder of social injustices and racial inequities that persist in society. People of color experience social disadvantages that increase their risk of CVD and poor disease outcomes. This review applies a comprehensive social determinants of health framework to understand how structural racism affects the health burden and increases the risk of CVD for historically underserved racial and ethnic groups.

Living arrangement modifies the associations of loneliness with adverse health outcomes in older adults: evidence from the CLHLS

Kai Wei et al.

Summary: This study investigates whether the association between loneliness and adverse health outcomes differs in community-dwelling older adults with different living arrangements. The results show that older adults who live with others but feel lonely have worse cognitive and physical functions, as well as higher mortality. Special attention should be given to this population to reduce adverse health outcomes and improve their quality of life and successful aging.

Reciprocal interaction between depression and pain: results from a comprehensive bidirectional Mendelian randomization study and functional annotation analysis

Bowen Tang et al.

Summary: This study found a causal link between depression and pain at the neck/shoulder, back, abdominal/stomach, and headache, but not with pain on the face, hip, and knee. Genetically instrumented multisite chronic pain and headache were also associated with major depression disorder. Functional annotation analysis showed that depression clustered closely with headache and neck/shoulder pain, exhibiting substantial brain tissue enrichment.

Is Fear of Falling Associated With Incident Disability? A Prospective Analysis in Young-Old Community-Dwelling Adults

Giulia Belloni et al.

Summary: High fear of falling and related activity restriction, assessed with the Falls Efficacy Scale-International (FES-I) and single question on fear of falling and activity restriction (SQ-FAR), are associated with incident disability in young-old community-dwelling people. The FES-I may serve additional clinical purposes in fear of falling characterization and management.

Symptom Burden Is Associated with Psychological Wellbeing and Mortality in Older Adults

Tuuli Elina Lehti et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the prognostic value of symptom burden and its association with psychological wellbeing and mortality in older community-dwelling individuals aged 75-95. The results showed a significant relationship between symptom burden and comorbidities, functional status, falls, psychological wellbeing, and mortality, independent of age and sex. Self-reported symptoms can provide valuable information about health of aging patients beyond medical diagnoses.

Pain and fatigue are longitudinally and bi-directionally associated with more sedentary time and less standing time in rheumatoid arthritis

Ciara M. O'Brien et al.

Summary: The study explored the longitudinal and bi-directional associations of pain and fatigue with sedentary and standing time in RA patients. Results showed that changes in pain were positively correlated with changes in sedentary time, while changes in fatigue were negatively correlated with changes in standing time. Path analysis supported the hypothesized bi-directionality of associations between changes in pain and fatigue with changes in sedentary and standing time.

Association between self-reported or perceived fatigue and falls among older people: A systematic review

Anastasia Pana et al.

Summary: The review examined the evidence of the relationship between self-reported or perceived fatigue and falls among older adults. Most studies reported a strong association between fatigue and incidence or risk of falls. However, evidence on the relationship between fatigue and recurrent or injurious falls is limited.

Fear of Falling in Older Adults: A Scoping Review of Recent Literature

Scott MacKay et al.

Summary: Most studies indicate that older age, female sex, previous falls, worse physical performance, and depressive symptoms are the main factors associated with fear of falling in older adults. Different measurement methods may lead to different results. Fear of falling is associated with higher likelihoods of future falls, short-term mortality, and functional decline.
