Transformation of dissolved organic matter during UV/peracetic acid treatment

Penghui Du et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the changes in characteristics and composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) under UV/PAA treatment, as well as the underlying mechanisms. UV/PAA treatment significantly reduced the aromaticity, apparent molecular weight, and fluorescent abundance of DOM, while producing more oxidized and saturated compounds. The reactive species (.OH and CH3C(O)O./CH3C(O)OO.) play a primary role in DOM changes, but with differences in reaction selectivity and mechanisms.

Transforming wastewater treatment plants into reclaimed water facilities in water-unbalanced regions. An overview of possibilities and recommendations focusing on the Italian case

A. Foglia et al.

Summary: Water scarcity is a major challenge, especially in climate change-affected regions like the Mediterranean basin. Promoting safe water reuse is crucial to meet future water demands sustainably and alleviate water stress. However, limited incentives, social trust, and governance complexity hinder the adoption of water reuse practices. Structural changes, including transforming wastewater treatment plants into reclaimed water facilities, and paradigm shifts in social, political, and legal factors are needed. This manuscript provides a comprehensive analysis of Italy's wastewater treatment sector and offers recommendations for wastewater reuse in agriculture, along with data on water reuse technologies. It aims to align technical, economic, legal, and socio-political perspectives to overcome barriers and promote water reuse development.

The influence of environmental factor on the coagulation enhanced ultrafiltration of algae-laden water: Role of two anionic surfactants to the separation performance

Tingting Zhu et al.

Summary: With the acceleration of urbanization and the improvement of people's living standards, more chemicals that humans rely on are entering the city and surrounding water bodies. Anionic surfactants, one of the essential products for human beings, are also one of the inducements that cause eutrophication. To solve the problem, the influence of typical anionic surfactants (SDS and LAS) on coagulation-enhanced ultrafiltration for algae-laden water treatment was investigated. The presence of these surfactants interfered with the ultrafiltration process and resulted in more organic compounds penetrating the membrane pores and blocking them.

UV/Fe(II) synergistically activated S(IV) per-treatment on HA-enhanced Ca2+ scaling in NF filtration: Fouling mitigation, mechanisms and correlation analysis of membrane resistance in different filtration stage

Wenkai Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the feasibility and mechanisms of UV/Fe(II) synergistically activated sulfite (UFS) pretreatment to mitigate membrane fouling caused by HA-enhanced Ca2+ scaling. The results show that UFS treatment leads to a reduction in hydrophobic substances and carboxyl groups, as well as the decrease in bulk crystallization size on the membrane surface. The pretreatment enhances the anti-foulant adsorption ability of the membrane by increasing the energy barrier between the membrane and foulants. The research provides advanced oxidation technology to alleviate the synergistically-fouling effect and offers guidance for UV/Fe(II) synergistically activated sulfite.

Summary: In this study, a peracetic acid (PAA) preoxidation method based on Fe(II) and UV activation was proposed to mitigate membrane fouling caused by natural organic matters (NOM) in surface water. The Fe(II)/UV/PAA system showed the highest degradation effect on naproxen (NAP) and significantly improved membrane flux and reduced fouling resistance. The PARAFAC-EEMs method was employed for the first time to monitor the degradation effect of oxidation on different components of NOM and its influence on membrane fouling, revealing the potential for rapid detection and prediction of membrane fouling caused by HPI/HPO components.

Summary: Peracetic acid (PAA) is an emerging oxidant and disinfectant that has gained increasing attention in wastewater treatment, food, and medical industries. This paper comprehensively reviews the reactivity of PAA with various organic compounds, highlighting PAA as a highly reactive and selective electrophile with significant variability in second-order rate constants. The study identifies sulfur moieties as exhibiting exceptionally high reactivity towards PAA and suggests the formation of oxygen-added reaction products from PAA oxidation. Further research is needed to evaluate a broader range of compounds and their oxidation products and toxicity in wastewater treatment.
