A ReaxFF molecular dynamics study of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon oxidation assisted by nitrogen oxides

Ying Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the reaction mechanisms of large polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and the interactions between O-2, NO, and NO2 were investigated using ReaxFF molecular dynamics simulations. It was found that the O radical is the key species for PAH oxidation and that NO2 is a stronger oxidizer compared to NO and O-2, significantly accelerating PAH oxidation. This research provides fundamental insights for designing strategies to inhibit soot and NOx emissions at the source.

Inhibitory mechanisms of ammonia addition on soot formation during n-decane pyrolysis

Lu Liu et al.

Summary: The addition of NH3 effectively inhibits soot formation and reduces the concentration of crucial precursors during n-decane pyrolysis, resulting in a decrease in the mass fractions of PAHs and soot particles. The growth of PAHs is influenced by N-PAHs and the formation of carbonitride species, while the formation of soot particles is inhibited by preventing the formation of key reactants.

Study on the formation process of soot from 2,5-dimethylfuran pyrolysis by ReaxFF molecular dynamics

Xinzhe Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the ReaxFF molecular dynamics simulation was used to investigate the chemical kinetics of soot formation during the pyrolysis of 2,5-dimethylfuran. It was found that the pyrolysis produced numerous soot precursors, leading to rapid formation of soot. The formation process of 2,5-dimethylfuran soot was divided into four stages: initial ring formation, growth of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, initial soot formation, and growth and graphitization of soot. The presence of aliphatic chains played a crucial role in the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Additionally, higher temperatures were found to accelerate soot formation, consistent with experimental findings.

Exploring depolymerization mechanism and complex reaction networks of aromatic structures in chemical looping combustion via ReaxFF MD simulations

Liangliang Meng et al.

Summary: Uncovering the reaction mechanism of various fuels to chemical looping combustion (CLC), especially depolymerization of solids in a complex environment, is an important scientific issue. This work presents molecular insights into the reaction behaviors and mechanism for several aromatic structures in the fuel reactor of CLC. It is found that the reaction process of aromatic fuels reacted with Fe2O3 as oxygen carriers in CLC can be divided into four stages, and the decomposition rate of fuel molecules is relevant to the reaction temperature and aromatic sizes.

Flue gas analysis for biomass and coal co-firing in fluidized bed: process simulation and validation

Daulet Zhakupov et al.

Summary: Coal-conversion technologies are often criticized for high pollutant emissions, highlighting the importance of optimizing the combustion process. Co-firing coal/biomass in a fluidized bed reactor has been shown to be an efficient way to achieve this. A new model designed in Aspen Plus was validated and found to accurately predict exhaust gas compositions. Sensitivity analysis on co-firing different fuels demonstrated optimal operating conditions for the fluidized bed reactor.

Analysis of soot formation of CH4 and C2H4 with H2 addition via ReaxFF molecular dynamics and pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry

Yang Wang et al.

Summary: The study reveals different chemical effects of H-2 on soot formation, with hydrogen addition promoting acetylene formation during methane combustion but inhibiting it during ethylene combustion. Furthermore, H-2 increases 6-membered rings in the largest PAH/soot particle in methane combustion while decreasing the number of ringed compounds in ethylene combustion. Hydrogen addition also promotes methane pyrolysis and inhibits ethylene pyrolysis.

Atmadeep Bhattacharya et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of using renewable oxygenates DMF and DME as alternatives to fossil fuels for gasoline engines, showing that the ignition inhibiting effect of DMF dominates over DME at certain conditions while DME enhances ignition at others. Additionally, DME is found to mitigate additional soot emissions when blended with TPRF, highlighting the potential benefits of using these renewable oxygenates in gasoline engines.
