Who Sticks with Meditation? Rates and Predictors of Persistence in a Population-based Sample in the USA

Sin U. Lam et al.

Summary: Despite the well-documented psychological benefits of meditation practice, limited research has examined factors associated with meditation practice persistence. This study explored rates and correlates of meditation persistence using a population-based sample in the USA. The findings provide insights into factors that may promote persistence with meditation, which can guide the delivery of meditation training.

A rowing-specific mindfulness intervention: Effects on mindfulness, flow, reinvestment, and performance

Katherine V. Sparks et al.

Summary: The study shows that a rowing-specific mindfulness intervention can improve athletes' flow, mindfulness, and performance, while reducing conscious motor processing. However, it does not have a preferential effect on mindfulness or reinvestment compared to the control group. Participants responded favorably to the intervention and evaluated it positively.

What do people mean when they talk about mindfulness?

Ellen Choi et al.

Summary: Psychological theories see mindfulness as a form of awareness that helps individuals accept the presence of stressful thoughts and emotions, allowing for engaged exploration and identification of adaptive responses. Critics argue that the popularization of mindfulness has led to misunderstandings among lay people, who often misconstrue acceptance as a passive endorsement of experiences, hindering effective problem-solving. Research findings show that while experts and clinical samples demonstrate convergence between awareness and acceptance, lay people's understanding of mindfulness lacks such associations.

Mindfulness-based programmes for mental health promotion in adults in nonclinical settings: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials

Julieta Galante et al.

Summary: Mindfulness courses in community settings have been popular, but the effectiveness may vary depending on the specific community. Research showed that mindfulness can reduce anxiety, depression, and stress, and increase well-being when compared to doing nothing, but results are inconsistent. High-quality collaborative research is needed to determine the most effective types of mindfulness courses for different communities.
