A Multi-Variable Sentinel-2 Random Forest Machine Learning Model Approach to Predicting Perennial Ryegrass Biomass in Commercial Dairy Farms in Southeast Australia

Elizabeth M. Morse-McNabb et al.

Summary: This study used satellite data and machine learning models to accurately predict perennial ryegrass biomass in southeastern Australia. The results showed that including SWIR bands of Sentinel-2 data significantly improved the prediction of pasture biomass above 4000 kg DM/ha. By utilizing a machine learning model, biomass prediction of ryegrass can be automated with high accuracy across different seasons and farm management types.

Multi-site calibration and validation of a wide-angle ultrasonic sensor and precise GPS to estimate pasture mass at the paddock scale

A. R. Lawson et al.

Summary: Ultrasonic sensors have not been sufficiently validated for their practicality and applicability, leading to low adoption rates. This study performed a multi-site and multi-season calibration and validation of a wide-angle, vehicle-mounted, ultrasonic sensor. The results showed that the ultrasonic sensor can accurately map pasture biomass and determine within-paddock biomass variation in the same time taken to survey a whole paddock using a different tool.

A Review of Precision Technologies for Optimising Pasture Measurement on Irish Grassland

Darren J. Murphy et al.

Summary: The development of precision grass measurement technologies is crucial for the sustainability of pasture-based livestock production systems, as it can increase grassland production in a more accurate and sustainable manner. This review highlights recent research on precision grass measurement technologies, addressing obstacles like sward heterogeneity and introducing alternative sensing technologies for grassland management. The potential for automating grass measurement and reducing labor costs, as well as the development of online grassland management systems, are also discussed.

Summary: Pasture-based dairy production systems have different nutrient profiles and potential nutritional benefits compared to conventional milk, making them attractive to consumers. However, competition in the market for grass-fed dairy products is increasing, highlighting the need for clear and independent standards to define what constitutes as grass-fed.

Mapping variability of pasture sward height, dry matter availability and disappearance during grazing

R. C. Dobos et al.

Summary: This study investigated the application of geostatistical methods to assess spatial variability in sward height and dry matter yield in severely drought-affected pastures. The results showed that the intensity of grazing by cattle is not random, demonstrating the potential for improving grazing management decisions with the incorporation of this methodology into rapid pasture data collection devices.
