Global burden of bacterial antimicrobial resistance in 2019: a systematic analysis

Christopher J. L. Murray et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant threat to global human health, and this study provides the most comprehensive estimates of AMR burden to date. By estimating deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) associated with bacterial AMR in 204 countries and territories in 2019, the study highlights the impact of resistance and the leading pathogen-drug combinations contributing to it.

Altered Gut Microbiome under Antiretroviral Therapy: Impact of Efavirenz and Zidovudine

Shilpa Ray et al.

Summary: ART does not reverse the dysbiosis of gut microbiome induced by HIV and may aggravate microbiota alterations due to the antibacterial effect of certain antiretrovirals. Restructuring the microbiota could be a potential therapeutic target in HIV-1 patients under ART.

Lentic and effluent water of Delhi-NCR: a reservoir of multidrug-resistant bacteria harbouring blaCTX-M, blaTEM and blaSHV type ESBL genes

Asghar Ali et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence and diversity of ESBL genes among bacteria from lentic and effluent water in Delhi-NCR, India. Phenotypic screening revealed a high percentage of ESBL-positive isolates, some of which were multidrug-resistant. Different locations showed variations in ESBL gene variants, with the co-existence of multiple gene variants common among isolates.

Extended-spectrum β-lactamase blaCTX-M-1 group in gram-negative bacteria colonizing patients admitted at Mazimbu hospital and Morogoro Regional hospital in Morogoro, Tanzania

Nyambura Moremi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the proportion of ESBL-GNB colonizing patients in hospitals in Morogoro, Tanzania. Among the 285 patients investigated, 43.2% were found to carry ESBL-GNB in their intestines, with Escherichia coli being the majority of isolates. Factors such as history of antibiotic use, current antibiotic treatment, duration of hospital stay, and history of previous admission independently predicted ESBL-GNB carriage.
