Self-assembly of corrosion inhibitors-intercalated layered double hydroxides (LDHs) in cementitious systems

Hailong Ye

Summary: This work investigates the self-assembly of corrosion inhibitor-intercalated layered double hydroxides in cementitious systems. The research reveals the impacts of inorganic and organic corrosion inhibitors on the intercalation chemistry and chloride-induced transformation of LDHs. The results show that direct admixing of inhibitors results in the spontaneous formation of inhibitors-intercalated LDHs, regardless of binder chemistry. The incorporation of inhibitors has little influence on chloride binding capacity but affects chloride resistance through pore structure modification.

Understanding pitting corrosion behavior of AZ91 alloy and its MAO coating in 3.5% NaCl solution by cyclic potentiodynamic polarization

Yuxiang Liu et al.

Summary: The pitting corrosion behavior of AZ91 alloy before and after micro-oxidation treatment in 3.5% NaCl solution was investigated. The results showed that both the alloy and the MAO-coated alloy suffer from pitting corrosion and it is difficult for pits to stop growth. The air-formed MgO film, MAO coating, and corrosion products significantly influence the propagation behavior of pitting corrosion. The corrosion products on the MAO-coated alloy are very loose, leading to severe pitting corrosion.

Improvement of Mechanical and Microstructure Properties of Modified Fly Ash-Blended Low Carbon Cement with Hydroxy Propyl Methyl Cellulose Polymer

Rajesh Kumar et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the effects of semi-synthetic cellulose and pulverized fly ash on ordinary Portland cement paste. The results show that the addition of semi-synthetic cellulose and fly ash can improve the flowability and setting time of the cement paste, retard the release of heat during hydration, increase the compressive strength, and promote the formation of hydrated gel.

Geopolymer coating modified with reduced graphene oxide for improving steel corrosion resistance

Ning Yang et al.

Summary: A geopolymer anti-corrosion coating modified with in-situ reduced graphene oxide (RGO) was developed in this study, and its corrosion resistance and physicochemical properties were investigated. By optimizing the graphene oxide (GO) content, the corrosion resistance of geopolymer-coated steel was significantly improved. The study also explored the corrosion protection mechanism with RGO modification.

A new look on the corrosion mechanism of magnesium: An EIS investigation at different pH

Abdelmoheiman Zakaria Benbouzid et al.

Summary: This study investigates the electrochemical impedance diagrams of a Mg electrode in a sodium sulfate solution at different pH values. A comprehensive model, independent of the pH range, is proposed to explain the singular behavior of Mg at low pH values, taking into account the presence of two adsorbed intermediates. The study also reveals that in acidic media, both the double layer and cathodic partial reaction should be considered, while at higher pH values, the oxide/hydroxide layer significantly slows down the magnesium corrosion rate.

Autogenous formation and smart behaviors of nitrite- and nitrate-intercalated layered double hydroxides (LDHs) in Portland cement-metakaolin-dolomite blends

Hailong Ye

Summary: The study found that nitrate and nitrite ions are more likely to intercalate in Ca-Al LDHs, which are released when exposed to chlorides. The addition of NaNO2 and NaNO3 may reduce the chloride binding capacity in ternary OPC-MK-DM binders, but enhance penetration resistance.

Reaction mechanism of dolomite powder in Portland-dolomite cement

Jiangtao Xu et al.

Summary: This study aims to understand the reaction mechanism of dolomite powder in Portland-dolomite cement (PDC) better. The research showed that dolomite exhibited higher chemical reactivity than limestone with increasing curing temperature, resulting in a refined pore structure and higher long-term compressive strength of PDC compared to PLC. Dolomite reaction in PDC at 40 and 60 degrees C produced hydrotalcite and calcite at the expense of portlandite, leading to the decomposition of Al-bearing products.

Effect of Ca Addition on Corrosion Behavior of Wrought AM60 Magnesium Alloy in Alkaline Solutions

Polina Metalnikov et al.

Summary: Magnesium (Mg) alloys have potential applications in improving fuel efficiency in automotive and aircraft industries due to their low density. However, the corrosion behavior of Mg and its alloys is a significant concern, and in this study, the addition of calcium (Ca) to wrought AM60 alloy was found to deteriorate corrosion resistance in a NaCl solution but improve it in the absence of Cl- ions. The study also discussed the impact of long-term immersion on corrosion behavior and alloy oxidation.
