Development of ceramic coatings on titanium alloy substrate by laser cladding with pre-placed natural derived-slurry: Influence of hydroxyapatite ratio and beam power

Aura-Catalina Mocanu et al.

Summary: The superior mechanical and tribological features of Ti and its alloys make them attractive, but they lack biocompatibility and inertness when implanted in the body for a long time. Surface modification with ceramic coatings is necessary to improve their biomedical features. This study proposed the prospect of coating Ti6Al4V substrates with bovine-bone derived hydroxyapatite (HA) using laser cladding technique. The structural analysis confirmed the formation of calcium titanate as the main phase and the presence of HA only in samples prepared with 100% HA ratio at low to medium laser powers. The optimal technological parameters for ceramic cladded layers with potential compatibility with regenerative medicine applications were determined.

Summary: This study explores the feasibility of harmoniously combining calcium-phosphate-based bioceramics and titanium alloys, successfully depositing bovine-bone-derived hydroxyapatite on Ti6Al4V substrates through laser cladding technology. The results demonstrate the formation of fully covered metallic surfaces with ceramic-based materials and a strong metallurgical bond achieved by modulating laser power and BHA-to-Ti ratio.

Hybrid ZnO/chitosan antimicrobial coatings with enhanced mechanical and bioactive properties for titanium implants

Ming-Hong Lin et al.

Summary: The biocomposite coating consisting of chitosan and ZnO shows enhanced antibacterial properties and bioactivity, effectively inhibiting bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation. The release of Zn2+ ions is attributed to the improved properties, including increased antibacterial activity and corrosion resistance. Additionally, the coating exhibits good cytocompatibility in MG-63 cells compared to pure Ti.
