Squeezed Abrikosov-Josephson Vortex in Atomic-Layer Pb Superconductors Formed on Vicinal Si(111) Substrates

Yudai Sato et al.

Summary: Unlike bulk superconductors, the superconductivity of Pb atomic layers on vicinal substrates is affected by surface steps. The critical temperature is reduced and the critical magnetic field is enhanced. Scanning tunneling microscopy reveals elongated vortices along the steps due to the reduced coherence length, which demonstrates that the steps act as disorder. Vicinal substrates provide a unique platform to manipulate the degree of disorder on 2D superconductors.

Gold Atoms Promote Macroscopic Superconductivity in an Atomic Monolayer of Pb on Si(111)

Denis S. Baranov et al.

Summary: Atomically thin superconductivity in Pb monolayers grown on Si(111) is affected by the addition of a small amount of Au atoms, which decorate the atomic step edges of Pb/Si(111) and link the electronic reservoirs of neighboring atomic terraces. This enhances the propagation of superconducting correlations across edges, facilitating coherence between terraces and promoting macroscopic superconductivity at higher temperatures.

Gold Interlayer Promotes Superconductivity in Single and Double Atomic Pb Layers on Si(100)

Leonid V. Bondarenko et al.

Summary: “” By introducing an atomic Au monolayer between a Pb film and a Si(100) substrate, it is possible to fabricate Pb films with single- and double-atom thicknesses. These films exhibit a 2D square-lattice structure with 1D atomic chains of Pb adatoms on the top, resulting in Si(100)1 X 7-(Pb, Au) and Si(100)5 x 1-(Pb, Au) superstructures for single and double atomic Pb layers, respectively. The common characteristic feature is the presence of bundles of quasi-1D metallic bands. It was observed that samples with a Au interlayer show enhanced superconductor properties compared to Pb layers grown on bare Si(100) surface. This finding opens up new possibilities for controlling low-dimensional superconductivity at the atomic scale.

Single and double In atomic layers grown on top of a single atomic NiSi2 layer on Si(111)

L. Bondarenko et al.

Summary: Atomic sandwiches consisting of In layers with different thicknesses have been grown on Si(111) and their properties have been studied using experimental techniques and theoretical calculations. The results show that the In phases formed on the NiSi2/Si(111) substrate have counterparts on the bare Si(111) surface. The structural, electronic, and transport properties of the In layers have been elucidated in detail.

Enhanced critical magnetic field for monoatomic-layer superconductor by Josephson junction steps

Fumikazu Oguro et al.

Summary: The study found that steps in the Si(111)-root 3 x root 43 Pb reconstructed structure significantly disrupt the electronic states of the superconducting atomic layer and hold Josephson-like vortices under the out-of-plane magnetic field. Monolayer superconductors exhibit unique properties under different magnetic field directions, providing potential for superconducting materials with high tolerance against magnetic fields.
