Exploring the pathways towards the mitigation of the environmental impacts of food consumption

Albert Kwame Osei-Owusu et al.

Summary: Improving livestock feed efficiency and reducing food waste can lead to modest reductions in Denmark's global food-related GHG, blue water, and cropland footprints. However, the most significant reduction potential for Denmark's total global food-related GHG, blue water, croplands, and grassland footprints lies in dietary changes towards no/less meat and dairy diets. Therefore, nudging consumers towards sustainable diets should be a key policy priority.

The greenhouse gas emissions of automotive lithium-ion batteries: a statistical review of life cycle assessment studies

Anne Bouter et al.

Summary: Sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) have been increasing globally, leading to a high use of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). This study aims to assess the environmental impact of LIBs and provides recommendations for harmonizing LIBs' environmental assessments. A qualitative and quantitative review of over 500 life cycle assessment (LCA) studies on LIBs' production for BEVs was conducted, resulting in the identification of key factors and a simplified model for assessing the global warming potential (GWP) impact of mobile LIBs' production.

Machine Learning Assisted Analysis of an Ammonia Engine Performance

Zhentao Liu et al.

Summary: The interest in utilizing ammonia in internal combustion engines stems from the trend toward decarbonization. This study focuses on increasing the knowledge of diesel engines modified for dedicated ammonia operation and uses a machine learning model to analyze the ammonia engine performance. The results show that the regular compression ratio of diesel engines allows efficient dedicated ammonia combustion, and the artificial neural network algorithm performs well in analyzing the engine performance.

Life cycle inventory of samarium-cobalt permanent magnets, compared to neodymium-iron-boron as used in electric vehicles

Gwendolyn Bailey et al.

Summary: This study compares the environmental impact of primary production routes for neodymium-iron-boron and samarium-cobalt magnets using life cycle assessment. It concludes that the production of samarium-cobalt magnets is not preferable in terms of environmental impact. The uncertainty range tends to be slightly higher for samarium cobalt, indicating more uncertain parameters in the study.

Energy, greenhouse gas, and water life cycle analysis of lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide monohydrate from brine and ore resources and their use in lithium ion battery cathodes and lithium ion batteries

Jarod C. Kelly et al.

Summary: The study found that lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide monohydrate produced from brine resources had lower life cycle greenhouse gas emissions and freshwater consumption per tonne compared to those produced from ore resources. Different lithium sources had an impact of up to 20% to 45% on greenhouse gas emissions for battery cathode materials and complete batteries.

Dynamic neodymium stocks and flows analysis in China

Tianli Yao et al.

Summary: The study shows that China's demand for neodymium has significantly increased while production has not kept up, leading to illegal mining practices. Factors such as reduced exports and smuggling of primary products contribute to the decreased net neodymium exports. Wind turbines and electric vehicles are projected to drive future demand for neodymium.

A dynamic material flow analysis of lithium-ion battery metals for electric vehicles and grid storage in the UK: Assessing the impact of shared mobility and end-of-life strategies

Mashael Kamran et al.

Summary: The challenge of limiting human-induced climate change is critical for the future, with a particular focus on emission reduction in the energy and transport sectors. Recycling end-of-life electric vehicle batteries is effective in reducing metal demand, while a shift to shared mobility could potentially lead to negative demand for virgin battery metals.
