Simulating homeostatic, allostatic and goal-directed forms of interoceptive control using active inference

Alexander Tschantz et al.

Summary: This article uses the framework of active inference to simulate and study interoceptive control and its dysfunctions. Interoceptive control aims to minimize the discrepancy between expected and actual interoceptive sensations through different forms of control. The analysis of generative models within active inference provides predictions for physiological and brain signals, supporting empirical research.

Unifying Large- and Small-Scale Theories of Coordination

J. A. Scott Kelso

Summary: Coordination is a common feature in all living things, achieved through informational coupling. Existing theoretical models focus on systems with many elements or just a few, but these two approaches lack connection. Recent research on intermediate-sized ensembles has shown potential to unite large- and small-scale theories of coordination.

Stochastic Chaos and Markov Blankets

Karl Friston et al.

Summary: In this treatment, a discussion on the existence and identification of conditional independencies in random dynamical systems at nonequilibrium steady-state was conducted. It was found that these independencies lead to a partition of states, with internal states separated statistically from external states by blanket states. Utilizing the Lorenz system, the steady-state density was parameterized in terms of surprisal or self-information, allowing for the identification of Markov blankets to characterize the coupling between internal and external states in a generalized synchrony. This synchronization could potentially serve as a mathematical basis for a fundamental form of sentience in biology.

Review on model predictive control: an engineering perspective

Max Schwenzer et al.

Summary: Model-based predictive control (MPC) is an advanced control method that predicts the future behavior of a controlled system using a process model. By implicitly determining the control law, MPC shifts the focus of controller design towards modeling the controlled process. With applications in various engineering fields, MPC reduces the initial hurdles for control and can even handle systems beyond the capabilities of traditional feedback controllers.

Minimal physicalism as a scale-free substrate for cognition and consciousness

Chris Fields et al.

Summary: This study presents a scale-free characterization of consciousness and cognition, which suggests that basal systems, including synthetic constructs, are informative about the structure and function of experience in more complex systems and offer advantages for experimental manipulation. It applies a minimal physicalist approach based on quantum information theory and shows that standard concepts such as integrated information and hierarchical Bayesian inference emerge naturally in this setting. Additionally, it demonstrates that self-representation in human autonoetic awareness can be traced back to stress responses in bacteria and other basal systems, serving similar basic functions.
