Removal of oxygen, nitrogen, and inclusions in powder superalloy scraps by electron beam smelting and induced solidification and the purification mechanisms

Xiaogang You et al.

Summary: This research investigates the use of electron beam smelting combined with induced solidification technology to remove O, N, and low-density inclusions from the scraps of powder superalloy ingots. It is found that the concentration of O and N as well as the number density of the inclusions can be significantly reduced through this method. The study also highlights the important role of natural and Marangoni convection in the movement of inclusions.

Microsegregation of a new Ni-Co-based superalloy prepared by electron beam smelting layered solidification technology and its homogenization behavior

Hongyang Cui et al.

Summary: The electron beam smelting layered solidification technology (ER S-LST) is proposed to fabricate a new Ni-Cobased superalloy with reduced segregation. Through studying the microstructures and homogenization behavior of the prepared ingot, it is found that the EBS-LST can effectively reduce solidification time, eliminate macrosegregation, and weaken microsegregation of the alloy. The homogenization treatment is also studied to understand its effect on microsegregation and microstructure evolution.

Alloys-by-design: Application to new superalloys for additive manufacturing

Yuanbo T. Tang et al.

Summary: New grades of gamma/gamma' nickel-based superalloy for the additive manufacturing process were designed using computational approaches, with processing trials carried out using powder-based selective laser melting. The superior processability and mechanical behaviour of the new alloys were demonstrated through microstructural characterisation, calorimetry and hot tensile testing. Suggestions for refinements to the modelling approach were also made.
