Design and application of an alkaline-surfactant-polymer (ASP) slug for enhanced oil recovery: a case study for a depleted oil field reservoir

Shilpi Sarmah et al.

Summary: Three chemicals, alkali, surfactant, and polymer, were thoroughly investigated to identify an optimal chemical enhanced oil recovery (CEOR) slug for depleted oil field reservoirs. The study focused on interfacial tension, emulsion stability, thermal stability, phase behavior, rheology, core flooding, economic evaluation, and modeling and simulation to optimize CEOR application. The combination of black liquor, sodium dodecyl sulfate, sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate, and co-surfactant and alkali resulted in a lower interfacial tension and maximum emulsification. The laboratory core flooding study showed a recovery efficiency of 33.25% at a chemical cost of 12.566 $/incremental bbl oil, while simulation resulted in a recovery of 47%.

Nanofluids of silica nanoparticles in low salinity water with surfactant and polymer (SMART LowSal) for enhanced oil recovery

Uma Sankar Behera et al.

Summary: Spontaneous imbibition is a common phenomenon in low permeability reservoirs, with potential for significant oil recovery. This study investigated the use of novel silica-based nanofluids as imbibition agents for enhanced oil recovery, showing promising results in improving recovery efficiency. Through measurements of interfacial tension and contact angles, the impact of these nanofluids on oil-NFs system and rock wettability was evaluated.

Impact of newly implemented enhanced oil and gas recovery screening policy on current oil production and future energy supply in India

Achinta Bera et al.

Summary: The current oil production in India relies heavily on mature fields, with insufficient discovery of new oil and gas fields posing a challenge to energy supply; Innovative EOR techniques are needed to meet the growing global crude oil demand; The Indian government has approved an EOGR policy and plans to implement it in the next 10 years, which is expected to significantly benefit India's energy economy and reduce crude oil imports.

Compositional simulation model and history-matching analysis of surfactant-polymer-nanoparticle (SPN) nanoemulsion assisted enhanced oil recovery

Nilanjan Pal et al.

Summary: Simulation using a robust compositional model was employed to predict the feasibility of nanoemulsion flooding for pilot oilfield projects. Core-flooding experiments showed tertiary recoveries of 21-27% of original oil in place for different SPN compositions of injected nanoemulsions, with good history matching of production data within 6% between experimental and simulated results. The efficacy of SPN nanoemulsions as an EOR fluid was supported by numerical simulation analyses.

Application of Novel Colloidal Silica Nanoparticles in the Reduction of Adsorption of Surfactant and Improvement of Oil Recovery Using Surfactant Polymer Flooding

Himanshu Kesarwani et al.

Summary: The study successfully addressed the issue of surfactant adsorption in the conventional surfactant polymer flooding by introducing novel colloidal silica nanoparticles (CSNs). The addition of CSNs not only decreased the adsorption rate of the surfactant, but also improved the performance of the flooding process.
